I wanted to share the gown that this pattern is based on. The pattern in Janet Arnold’s “Patterns of Fashion 1” can be found on pages 48-49. I’m sure that is the starting point for the Reconstructing History pattern. She has simply done the scaling up. The original garment is in the Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A). They have dated it 1805-1810. Janet Arnold dated it a little more specifically 1806-1809. Janet Arnold states that this “frock” ‘closely resembles fashion plates and descriptions of evening dresses in “La Belle Assemblée” for 1807.” She goes on to say the same style in a plain muslin is shown for day wear, and in September 1808 this style gown is shown again as “a morning negligee…worn with a Gipsy straw hat” along with this description; ‘it is necessary to observe that with this dress it is more consistent and decorous to cover the bosom either with a shirt of French net or wrought muslin’. She goes on to say that this same style gown is shown in “The Lady’s Monthly Museum” between 1806 and 1809. The original gown: tinyurl.com/34cbpo

I just tried to order the day dress pattern, and at first it said $30 w/ $10 shipping. But after I logged in as requested, it said the shipping was $30. I've deleted the item, retried, w/ no change, then logged out and retried, still with no change in shipping. So I've emailed the company to find out why the heck shipping for a paper pattern is $30. So much for my birthday present.

Well, between this and the new half robe I want to lengthen to be Marianne's Orange S and S dress, there goes $70 more dollars I am so excited about this pattern, I wonder if she shows how to do the pleating on the front on the one on the right. I have often looked at, and longed to make, it from the book Costumes up Close.

And what do you think of this new pattern Aylwen?
Does it look like other patterns you already have or is there great new stuff in it? What about the research she's provided?
Please DO share! ;D

I didn't realize RH was releasing Janet Arnold patterns, I guess that makes it easier for those who don't like to scale up! This gown is actually on my to-sew list, though I will simply be scaling up from J. Arnold's book.

I haven't tried it yet, but I'm starting to feel concerned that a pattern is being released to the general public without evidence of it actually being made and working for the modern figure. Do we know if this will work without much alteration? On the other hand, I hate drafting, so its a bonus time saver! Must get one made myself so I can speak with confidence. At the moment I use a combination of S&S and LMB. Cheers, Aylwen
