In a lot of the pictures i've been looking at I haven't seen the shift sleeve under the sheer sleeve of the dress, so are these ladies wearing sleeveless shifts?

I was just wondering about this! I hope someone can solve the mystery.
It doesn't make practical sense (to me) to wear a sleeveless shift, or none at all, if the purpose of a shift is to protect the delicate gown from sweat and oil, but I can't see anything under there which just leaves me scratching my head.

On I thought the main function of the shift was to help control the er ladies...I guess keeping the sweat off the dress makes sense too

sleeveless shifts did indeed exist. there are some examples in napoleon and the empire of fashion as well as some fashion prints i have seen. also i have seem a picture of an extant one at some point. even though a shift is meant to keep the sweat off the outer garment does not means everyone was as practical minded as today women will do impractical things for fashion , and sweat into the under arm area of their dresses...

That's good to know! I was thinking, though shifts would still protect dresses... these days we do have antiperspirant deodorant so they wouldn't be as needed? Well I'm not sure I'll have time to make another one anyway...I'm totally stressing out about having clothes for the retreat but FABULOUS Denise is helping me Thursday so hopefully I"ll get a few dresses done. Wish me luck!

I've dispensed with my sleeved shifts and have replaced them with all sleeveless shifts. I did it for practical purposes--I have lots of sheer sleeves and I'd rather not have the sleeves of my shift sticking out underneath them.
