I just realized that JoAnn Peterson of Laughing Moon Mercantile has two new patterns for regency tailcoats! (I'm pretty sure this is old news, but I've been under a rock for the last year with school work.) It appears that she released #121 first and met with some criticism because the pattern has a waist seam and she dates it to 1810-20. As a result, she has also released #122, without the waist seam and fewer collar treatments. She also mentions in her note on #121 that she's working on a pattern based on the Thomas Coutts garments due out in 2014. The sleeves look a little full at the upper arm/shoulder, and I was wondering if that was seen in earlier (1800-1810) coats? Has anyone ordered or made these up? At $18, they're about half the price of the Country Wives pattern and look like they have nice details (lapel/collar options, tail pockets, breast pocket). I've used other patterns from LMM in the past and felt they went together easily and had good, clear instructions, so I'm hopeful about these. #121 Men's Regency Tailcoat - five collar options, waist seam#122 Men's Regency Tailcoat - three collar options, no waist seam

The pattern is excellent, (the multi-color printing is really helpful), it goes together well and the results look good so far (I have to confess I haven't completed it yet). Based on that experience, I would recommend it over the Country Wives pattern for fit, although if you want to hand sew the coat, the Country Wives instructions are probably more helpful.

Hi lastbloom, I have attempted to neither construct nor authenticate the LM patterns (I drafted my husband's from scratch, but might try one of these next time! It helps when somebody else has already done all the balancing and mathematical calculation for finicky pieces.) However, this brought to mind a bit of research by Maggie Waterman (of The Undressed Lady) regarding waist seams in men's tailcoats. This research immediately knocks out LM #121 for your desired period (which is listed as 18-10-1830, anyway). LM #122 looks great, though! Reduced fullness in the sleeve, little-to-no waist shaping (except out of the side-back seams). If you try out the pattern, please do share photos! Would love to see how it turns out.
