I am of course obsessed with regency costuming and am doing tons of research. I feel scattered and like I can't find things when I need/want them. How, where, what, when, who are you researching. How do you organize everything? Can you cross reference things easily? Do you have binders full of info or is everything on your computer?

Are you sitting down, with something to drink, time on your hands? Mine mainly is in my computer (pictures, links to websites, instructions for making things). I also saved the front pic of patterns I own so I don't buy duplicates. I have photo albums on my harddrive, broken down by eras. I surf the net continually and save pics of costumes I like, or hats/hairstyles/shoes, etc. Obviously my computer's harddrive is getting overwhelmed with photos, and that uses up the largest amount of memory. So I started copying the albums to a cd, and delete some things off my harddrive. But keep some of my favorites. Then I started printing out things to save them too. IE, instructions for making things, and pics of things I want to make. Are you getting the feeling I don't do much else? Then I have a couple small albums that have vinyl pockets. In one, My Costume Projects, I put a swatch of my fabric with a pic of the gown I want to make with it. I also include the amount of fabric I have of it. In another, My Costume Gallery, I have pics of the completed costume with the pattern and fabric swatch. In another full size album, My Patterns, I printed my pattern photos, 3 to a page, with the pattern number, and amounts of fabric needed. So at a glance I can see which patterns I own, and how much fabric is needed, w/o having to pull out the big ole cargo tote holding all the patterns and look it up. When I go on a shopping trip for fabric, I have a little baggie of fabric swatches, and a small notebook of pattern numbers/descriptions/ & amount of fabric needed. So I have that info at all times. I have a couple fabrics that I'm looking for a certain shade to go with them, and they're very odd. So having the swatch helps me not buy something that won't work. Having these saved to a disk, or printed out, will greatly help if I have another computer crash like I did three years ago. *shudder* Did I say I was obsessive? No, just organized, but scattered brained sometimes.

Wow. I have my computer to browse the internet with, my tote of patterns and my costumes hanging on the back of the guest-room door.

Right Now I have a folder on my desktop that has several folders of images. I have almost 100 links bookmarked. I am thinking about creating an album in iPhoto to organize my images with key words so that I can search for things like bonnet and blue and print and fashion plate. I am deciding about printing things out and storing binders of things so that I don't have to always get on the computer to find eerything and I can take them with me since I don't have a laptop.

Val, you amaze me! I was taking fashion courses in college and I have a few history of fashion books that I dearly love. Also I book mark everything I find and am directed too. I need to be more organized. Since coming to this forum I have added tons more information to my little library. I intend to search my local library soon and scan in information into my computer. One day I intend to have a whole hard drive dedicated to my costuming and such.

I have a large collection of web-links, that I desperately try to keep sorted (I can never decide if sorting by era is better than by subject), plus a number of downloaded pictures (that I try to keep the attributions for). In addition, I have a growing number of books, which I refer to often.
I also have a CD we picked up at the National Portrait Gallery in London, with a huge collection of portraits that can be sorted by date, subject type, etc. (Unfortunately, it won't run under my current mac OS, and I need to get an emulator.) Possibly the best ten pounds I spent on that trip!

Where to start? I have a file cabinet for the paper records. Organized by subject, sub-subjects, then by date. Doing mostly military lends itself fairly easily to this. The problem is, it's only a 4 drawer file cabinet and I may need to get another one in the near future because it's nearly full. One drawer is mostly patterns for clothing, equipment and accoutrements.
Other than my desk, the rest of the walls in my home office are covered with book shelves except one section where by sabre rack and boots hang - for now anyway.
And then there's the computer. I'm kind of a geek and have my own server at home. Like the rest of you, I have a fair number of links, pics, files, etc, stored. I have most of the electronic stuff organized similiar to the file cabinet.
When I go to events I have a 4" 3 ring binder that I keep copies of just enough documentation for judging on my uniform, accoutrements, and equipment. The main documents stay at home in the file cabinet and computer.
Whew! I think I have too much stuff!
