Hi Tess, Mississinewa 1812 is located ~8 miles from Marion, Indiana. Here is a link to their website: www.mississinewa1812.com/ If you look under maps, there is a map of Marion which shows a number of hotels toward the top. I usually stay at the Comfort Suites a couple nights before the event, in the field during the event, and back to the Comfort Suites for Sunday evening. There is a full range of hotels from expensive to inexpensive, so you have a good choice. I would also suggest you try to be there during the day on either Friday, Saturday (probably best) or Sunday. They alwasy have from 130 to 150 vendors - sutlers of all kinds, food purveyors, entertainment of variety, etc. Some of us affectionately call the vendor area Vegas. It is worth attending. But be careful, you will probably find plenty of things to spend your cash on You can use the Contact Us button on the website and inquire about registration forms and simply fill out the registration form that you will be participating as a civilian and leave it at that. Or you could see if you can be included in the registration of an attending unit. It really is a fun event. If you can afford the expense and time, it would be worth driving up on Friday evening, stay in Marion Friday and Saturday nights, and go for all day on Saturday to visit Vegas, see a couple of battles with some rather dashing officers , then attend the dance under the big top in the evening. And you are always welcome to visit our camp. Usually my camp is close by the 19th Infantry that Miss Credit has recently joined. So you should be able to find good company. I hope to see and meet you there.

Oh Major you flatter me so! I can assure you that my dance card shall not be filled so early in the evening, on the contrary I had only one dance partner the entire evening of the Lansing ball. The gentlemen either seemed wary of changing partners or found the ladies to be too intimidating. I shall, in fact, reserve the first dance or two just for you. Oh wow the Officers Mess, I would have never dreamed of attending! I have heard Miss Betsy speak of them, I hear they usually involve a bit of wine. I would love to attend the Officers Mess for a bit, just for the experience if not to see you. As for the Grand Tactical I am very excited to be in attendance I think aside from Mississinewa it is the most anticipated event on my calendar thus far. Tess, As I have afore mentioned I have not attended Mississinewa but I hear it is a great 1812 event to attend. I have been looking forward to being there for about 3 years now and I greatly suggest attending. Hmm I am sure that you could find a hotel close by but I would not see any problem in just dressing up and coming out. I have seen it done at CW events where non reenactors would dress and attend functions, I know some events even offer a discounted admittance fee if you come in period dress. I myself share a tent with my beau and fortunately over the years of us both reenacting we have gathered the necessities, but like the others I stay in the field with the men. Perhaps you could email the event managers for Mississinewa? Dear Miss Credit, I suppose there are some gentlemen that are not inclined to changing partners. I've been known to be the same a time or two. But all the gentlemen at the Ball? That seems...well...odd to me. Perhaps if I am able to attend next year, as I had hoped this year, I will have to show them what it's all about! Such flattery is deserved. I would be most honored indeed for the first dance with you at any event. And attend the Officers Mess you shall. Perhaps we can convince Lt. Col. and Mrs. Trumbull to arrive in unison. That would add a little fun as well. Yes, there is always wine, port, sherry, and non-alcohol drinks as well. Hard liquor is not allowed in our Mess. Every Mess must have rules! There is always very fine hors d'oeuvres as well. But I must admit, while the food and drink are wonderful, the society polite, the conversation satisfying, I generally tire shortly and find my way back to the dance and shortly to retire (the event can be very tiring for the military, especially the officers). Either way you can be assured of an escort back to the dance when you are ready. It is an experience and fun for awhile. I would be honored again to have you attend, if only for a short while. And like I said, we can try to coordinate our attendance or arrival with Lt. Col Trumbull and Miss Betsy. That would be fun.

Oh Major that sounds simply delightful! Now you shall have me fretting over the construction of a new gown just for this event. Oh I simply cannot wait! I think we could easily convince Lt. Col Trumbull and Miss Betsy to attend the Mess with us. I think it shall be a lovely time, wine, hors dóeuvres and polite society are always welcome at any event.

Major and Miss Credit,
I think I met the "Miss Betsy" you both referred to earlier in this post at the Jane Austen Festival today. Betsy Bashore presented a Regency Fashion Show and was a world of information. When I was looking over the handout, it listed the 19th U.S and I thought that sounded familiar. Is this your friend??
Miss Credit, is the 19th your unit? I couldn't remember.

Tess, I'm neither the Major nor Miss Credit, but yes indeed, that was Betsy Bashore presenting at the Jane Austen Festival who is also the Miss Betsy connected to the 19th US. ;D
She's amazing in her knowledge of Regency era clothing, isn't she? And she's one of the nicest ladies to talk to!

Oh yes! That is the Betsy that I speak so fondly of and you are correct the 19th US is my unit. I was hoping to make it to the Jane Austen Festival but unfortunately I had to work. I am so glad that you had the pleasure of meeting Betsy, she is indeed amazing in her knowledge of Regency fashion and such a great help to myself. I actually just met her this past November and I have to say I was quite intimidated at first, she really knows her stuff, but she is the sweetest and most helpful of ladies. If you do start reenacting you will see that many of the ladies involved in 1812 are the same.
Tess, please do share all about the event. I would love to hear of the fashion show and any and I insist that you share any and all pictures you may have!

My Dear Miss Credit, et al, Yes, I'm still around. I have just been extremely busy. This is the first week where I have had a few days with nothing going and I plan to simply lounge and watch some baseball or whatever on TV - I'm doing nothing this week! I have some bad news. It now looks like I will not be able to make it to Mississinewa this year. There is just too much going on at work and I simply can't get away at that time. The good news is that I am still planning on attending the Grand Tactical. And I may not have to bivouac in a forward position on Saturday night with my troops and should be able to attend one or more of the social activities - I hope to do some dancing
