Does anyone have suggestions for period-accurate hors d'oeuvres/appetizers/snacks? I'd like to bring something to the next English Country Dance. I was going to make my gougères (because i love them!) but thought it'd be fun to bring something more appropriate.
I see that there are links to other foods, but they look like either proper meals or desserts and that's not what I'm after.
Thanks!

I would go to... Jane Austen Center Magazine (the site seems to be down at the moment, but you can google it) Historic Foodwww.historicfood.com/I always laugh when I see the word Hors D'oeuvres, because my grandma calls them "wh*res ovaries" :-P or "horse doovers"

One of my favorites is cucumber sandwiches. Make them finger size with a slice of cucumber and either cream cheese, farmers cheese, or butter.
Another very period item we usually do is Snicker doodles. Very period, and VERY good.
Mmmm.

Dear Major Can you elaborate on your last posting here? I've never heard of this recipe.

Dear Major Can you elaborate on your last posting here? I've never heard of this recipe. Aylwen, the dashing Major has not been to visit us in a very long time. We miss him terribly. However what he is describing is the very American 'Snickerdoodle' cookie. www.food.com/recipe/soft-snickerdoodle-cookies-97496
