I am interested in the Anne of Green Gables-Belle Epoque/Edwardian look just because I loved those movies. I like Little women inspired victorian. I like from the last century the New Look. I am a huge Dior Fan.

Do you do ren faire? I have never been to one. It looked lilke a lot of fun when Hef and the girls went on the Girls Next Door.
Georgian gowns are so frou frou and fussy. I think that they are beautiful to look at, but I would never want to wear one. Panniers seem like the least pleasant garments. I was a participant in a living history experience in Ohio that was Civil War/ Victorian when I was I Highschool. I really didn't mind wearing a reasonable hoop, it was better than wearing 20lbs of petticoats.

No, as much as I would have loved to do the ren faires, I never did. New England has a huge one yearly, but I never got the chance to go. Right now I don't think I have the money for a hooped gown. All that fabric! Wow! Besides, I'm short and chubby, so I'd probably look like I'm wide and standing in a hole in a hooped getup with a hard bodice. We just got some new members who do sca and rennaissance stuff, and in addition they do very extreme georgian costuming. They're really nice. One couple among them just had a regency wedding. I told my hubby that we had to go to the ren faire next year here in Oregon as well as the fairy festival thing. I probably won't go in costume or anything.

I adore Medieval, Georgian, Natural form Bustle, Edwardian, 20s and 30's...

I haven't quite dabbled in making costumes for these periods yet, but I do do like the following periods:
Renaissance>Elizabethan>Georgian> Regency Of course > Edwardian
Forties (WWII)
I also like 'Gothic' Victorian, the vampirey, exaggerated literary kind. I'm not big on Victorian otherwise. I do confess a secret desire to make a huge romantic crinoline and dress with yards and yards and yards of fabric.

Hubby and I go to our Ren Faire every year! In costume too. He loves that time period and I have really gotten into too. I really like the vast difference from peasant to nobility. Very fun to design costumes for. Other than that and regency I haven't really done much else. I love the 50's though, but that's not really costuming in my opinion. I love how lady like they used to dress for every day life!

The renaissance/Tudor era has never caught my imagination. I did a bit of (very poor) early Norman (1100's) back when I was in the SCA. I've done one-offs of early Victorian (because I can't stand mid-Victorian) to attend Dickens' Faire:  (The hat is a bit extreme, I know) and a 1640's (late three-musketeers era) for a dance:  Other than that, i've done a number of science-fictiony things for various SF conventions. (Oh, and the San Jose Sharks (local hockey team) as a quidditch team. That is so pretty! I know what you mean about saying you weren't going to make you gown and then doing it anyway. I could not find a decent gown and made my own too.

That's beautiful, Maudelynn. I love the color. I'll be making one of that era soon. Still finishing the alterations on my stays that I made recently, then I can make a dress to go over it.

Me? Thank you! I was so nervous as I did my own hair and makeup. Every stylist I tried wanted to overdo both... think modern idea of MA with spackled on make up... so I did it myself it took me about 3 1/2 weeks to make the dress all by hand except i sewed the main bodice pieces with a machine, the skirt and trim was a killer.... thank you again |
