Does anyone out there know how to sew button holes by hand? Or know of a site or something that has tips and or directions? Thanks a bunch!

Thanks a bunch cosmo, you didn't have to do all the searching, but I appreciate it. I need to get some sewing books!

Those are useful, detailed, and rather intimidating instructions. Let me see if I can whip up some diagrams tonight and post something. Sewing buttonholes is not difficult, once you figure it out.

That is an excellent demonstration! I'll have to remember the bit about tugging the gimp to tighten the buttonhole. (I didn't get a chance to make any diagrams last night, alas.)

I am being terribly pathetic and haven't make any drawings, but I found this www.ushist.com/general-information/stitch_p.htmwhich has a picture of the stitches that is better than what I could manage to draw. The only other important thing is to remember to pull the thread away from the cut edge (upwards in the picture above) so that the purl ends up along the cut edge. I also start and end buttonholes by taking a stitch under where the buttonhole stitches will be, rather than tying a knot in the end of the thread.

I found an illustration that went the other way, so you could sew left to right rather than right to left. Some people might find that easier. It makes a lovely edge. I found that the thread tended to twist up because of the way I moved the needle, so I twisted the needle the opposite direction (just rolled it between my fingers a little bit) during every stitch.
