I live in Seattle WA - and I have heard there is a Puget Sound Chapter just getting going, but in the mean time I plan on joining everyone down in Oregon for the big events! I am already planning the Fox Hunt (sounds like so much fun!). I do have a riding habit question...do I need to make a full riding habit or could I make a dress with spencer jacket combo? I haven't made any regency clothing yet so it would be nice to have a dress that I could use on other occasions. Does anyone have other ideas? Thanks! I look forward to meeting everyone

I suppose it depends on what you will do at the foxhunt event. If you're not going to be riding, then a dress and spencer sound perfect. If you're going to be around horses and the associated dirt, I suggest you choose fabrics and colours that will hide the dust and tolerate a bit of hard wear. In the period, habits were worn for "travel clothing" as well as for riding. The concept is that a habit is comfortable and stylish and hard wearing. If you make your dress and spencer combination with this in mind, I’m sure you’ll be pleased with your new garments.

The hunt is going to be a scavenger hunt with a faux fox. So there will not be any horses present...at least I don't think so! (Too bad too because I love horses Regency + Horses would be two of my favorite things together *sigh*) In I think...the A&E P&P and also the 1999 Mansfield Park both Fanny and Jane ride with a spencer jacket and dress. I really can't remember though, I will be watching them again to make sure. Isn't there a scene in Sense and Sensibility with Emma Thomson where she is riding with Edward on horseback through a park? Hmmm...I've got that one on VHS and don't have a VCR anymore! Oh no! Any help a confirming these references would be great. For now...I am definitely leaning toward dress and jacket. Thanks!

I just checked my copy of Sense and Sensibility. Elinor is wearing a riding habit there. At least, I think that's what it is. It's a blue jacket and skirt, with a rather curious kind of vest and ruffled shirt underneath. A bit reminiscent of men's attire, actually.

I believe that riding habits were usually made by men's tailors, and constructed much the same way men's garments were made. This is why riding habits have a lot of elements taken from masculine clothing.
