I am vigilantly practicing my hand sewing techniques and learning a great deal of new stitches from the sewing manuals from Kannik's Korner (Lady's Guide to Plain Sewing vol 1 & 2 and Workman's Guide to Tailoring Stitches). My supplies are in the mail, and when they arrive I will begin my first hand sewn garment, a shift, and then a shirt for my husband.
I was looking over the KK men's shirt pattern, and at a certain point in constructing the collar, there is an option to create a picot edge (or "mice teeth") before continuing on with the shirt. I looked up the stitch in the Lady's Guide Vol. 1 , where I am informed that in addition to adding a pleasing decorative touch, the "teeth" protect the edges of shifts and shirts from wearing out.
I was wondering if anyone had come across a close up of this picot edging on extant pieces. I'd like to get a better idea of the spacing between picots, and where they were placed, approx. number, etc. I made 5 practice picots and felt like my eyes were going to fall out! They are very tedious!
