I've been hoarding a length of white silk chiffon with vertically embroidered white stripes, and I was hoping I could pick some of the wonderfully knowledgeable and creative brains around here for some ideas.
From the extant gowns I've seen in museums and in books, I don't think silk chiffon was used often (I've never seen an example of a chiffon gown). I'm willing to be anachronistic about it, because I love the fabric and it's languishing in my stash, but I'd love to know why this was the case. Was cotton muslin gauze just more exotic at the time? Was chiffon not available during the period?
I'd also love to hear what sort of gown design would suit the drape and stripes of this fabric. How would you make the most of the stripes? What would you wear under it? When sewing a regency gown with a very sheer fabric, what do you do about the bodice (flat line? separate under dress?)?
I'll post a photo of the fabric after my little guy wakes up (fabric is in the attic, and attic door is in his room!).

I can't speak to the history of chiffon, but I have always loved this dress by Lara Corsets: www.laracorsets.com/1820_Ballgown_2005.htm The chiffon doesn't seem out of place at all. Vertical stripes always look nice, maybe you could draw some of them up like in the picture with flowers or tassels if it looked too stripey?

That dress is very pretty -- I am stunned by how much labor must have gone into it!
I have turned the house upside down looking for the cord to connect the camera to the computer, but my husband has hidden it somewhere. Oh the miseries of modern life!
It's been a while since I took the fabric out of the chest it lives in, and I had forgotten how fine the embroidered motifs are, that the fabric had a bit of crinkle to it, and that I bought an outrageous quantity -- I think something on the order of 6-8 yards.
