A friend posted this story on her website and I think it's apropos to our discussion! www.oprah.com/spirit/Making-Your-Ideas-a-Reality-Whats-Holding-You-BackI really think this is something that could work, we just have to make it happen. I mean there are lots of historical enthusiasts out there especially for this time period. Maybe we should set up a survey and see how many responses we get...with questions like would you be interested in an All Regency Resort? What would you like to see there, learn there etc and ask that people pass the survey on to others who are interested in such things. We'd get a pretty good idea of how many people would be interested and that could give us an idea of whether or not such a venture is plausible...What do you think?

Thank you for that article. I will have to admit that one of my flaws is that I don't believe in myself enough. I tend to think that no one would want to have anything to do with this idea. That it isn't good enough. I really am trying to change that. Sometimes I am good at making things happen and sometimes I'm not. I knew from the very beginning that I would need a partner to help me get this going. And letting people close to my baby? Not as scary as I think it is.
I love the idea of a Survey. Though I do have to admit that getting things out there isn't my strongest suit. If you want, you can e-mail me and we can talk about this more (As I feel it is pulling away from Regency style things and more into business). My e-mail is on my profile page.
I am going to do more research. That article inspired me to look harder. Thought, really, I do love to research.

Magical Idea!! I know it is 3:00 in the morning local time, but I woke up and I had this idea and I have to share. When I first thought of the resort, I though "Nice little country hamlet and some estates. It will be lovely!" but now that I think about it, it seems a little limiting. How about the town, as you go through it, morphs from small hamlet to almost Londonesq surroundings? It gets better looking as you go. I think that would allow for a dimly lit tavern and small shops but also allow for a really nice looking tea shop and town houses. Maybe have the town on a curve so that when you are in the London area, that's all you see? Let me know what you think.

I think that's a cool idea, and it would give more options for lifestyle get aways LOL there might be some few out there interested to live as the working class may have lived...or those houses could be used as storage areas too, people wouldn't be so apt to go to Cheapside as it were so that makes sense to use the area as storage. But here could be a house of good/ill repute LOL The bigger the town becomes though the more funding/money we'll need Emailing you shortly!

Thank you Goblin. It's wonderful information that you gave me. And the quote about the Theater with the new lighting is especially exciting because I want to have one. I have been thinking about the different ways to use the "candles" and reflectors is one that came to mind. I am going to read through those posts that you linked and get more information on them. I just discovered that there are a lot of hits on ebay for "battery flickering candle" www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_nkw=battery+flickering+candle

I know I'm new, but I read through this thread just now and had to say that this is an amazing idea and I hope you will be able to do this! I would love to visit a place like this, or even work at it! A time travel resort sounds very appealing to me, and I think Regency would be perfect as the costumes aren't as difficult/elaborate to put together as other time periods are.
I wish you the best of luck with this! And oh yes, I agree, maybe on the west coast would be nice, as it seems there's not as much going on on this side for Regency. Though I would be willing to travel to the east coast for something like this.

We are still working on it. The hardest bit for us will be the funding, but we are working on it still. Amanda and I even had a long conversation about it today, spilling ideas and such. If you have any ideas feel free to share them. And welcome to the site!

Exactly. On Saturday I ran into a person we were thinking of hiring for some work for the initial stage (presentations, business plan, etc.) and we talked about it during the intermission of the play we were both at. I don't know if we will still use here as Amanda now knows an architect who loves the Regency, but it's good contact work all the same.
And again, anyone with ideas feel free to share them!

Just to add my humble opinion, I'm not sue if you've put this idea on hold as it's been a year since there was a post added, but I think it's a marvelous idea! I would love to help out, in any way I'd be welcome. I'm not sure how to contribute,.. though I am an artistic jack-of-all-trades. Illustration and graphics etc... And in the case you are continuing to collect ideas, I would think a book shop/library is a good addition. Not only is it a good information source for people who find a particular interest while there, but it could provide a paper making workshop and writing materials. Oh!! For funds... you could get a grant, perhaps,.. since this could be an education source, like any museum,...?

This sounds quite lovely! I'm new here as well, so I'm not sure if anyone is still interested in pursuing this idea. For now I would take just a weekend excursion. I must admit the idea of a Regency House party sounds amazing. If I might add, perhaps renting a manor home and "staff" for a whole week would suffice but it does sound like a great business venture.

Daveeda: The bookshop is an amazing idea. Amanda and I have been working on this project off and on outside of the forum, and while we have much more research, aren't close to making this a reality yet. Never fear, we are working on it. Unfortunately there aren't any grants out there that we qualify for, that I have seen, as we would take the shape of a business rather than a museum. As soon as we get this going in the physical sense, I am sure that we would be happy to take you up on your offer to help. Ebony: The idea of renting a place and staff for a week is appealing. Oh that we lived in England where there are houses of the period and furnished to historical perfection! I would be willing to take any amount of time, from a weekend to a month.

Well here's a little something... www.federalgrantswire.com/21st-century-museum-professionals.html :-) While it's true you technically don't consider yourself a museum, you do qualify, I believe. Since the whole place will be a living exhibit on display, and you'll have extant things included. Also, though you aren't a museum per se, there's nothing to stop you from calling yourself a non-profit company. (yay for being tax exempt!)

Thank you for the link! I hadn't heard of that site and now I have another venue to search. One thing that I have found in my research of grants and federal funding is that the agency offering the grant usually has very specific requirements for obtaining the grant. Usually you already have to be in business. They don't offer up money for start up's unless it is for research projects like building mechanical squirrels to interact with other squirrels in the wild (Yes, that actually happened ) and that is where we are currently trying to get to. It would be possible to make the place a non-profit, charging only what it would take to pay off the people working there, the food, and any debt payments needed to keep the land and building and such. I certainly know that if I wanted to become rich, this would be the last way to do it. But the simple fact is that if we needed to classify this place, in order to get a grant, it would fall more under B&B or Hotel status than museum, especially since the likelihood of us having original museum grade pieces on hand would be low and would not be open to the public for tours. And that for me is where the difficulty lies. At this point in time, I am honestly thinking of just buying a plot of land, building a summer home, furnishing it and decorating it like a Regency home, and inviting people to spend the summer with me . Why couldn't I have been born a Trump?

Hmm.. you have a good point there, about it being from the ground up, and having to specifically classify it is limiting.. Hmm... How about a Federal construction grant based on economic need? I'm not familiar with the location you were looking at, but if it's underdeveloped, perhaps..? You'd appeal to the Economic Development Administration, and perhaps the Department of Education as well. Sorry I couldn't be of more help with this, but I'll keep digging. I'd love to have a home outfitted that way too, but it'd be great to see your dream come to fruition :-)
