Okay, so I watched the new Northanger Abbey again. And wished I had kept my big mouth shut in my earlier posts, because now I LOVE it. Love it love it love it. I must have been in a really snotty mood. I don't know what I was thinking when I criticized it so harshly. We are all allowed to change our minds. It's a sign of growth

Did any of you notice that the bonnets appear to have been, in large part, actual period items? They are far too smooshed, bent, creased and dented to be newly-made. There were a few exceptions, like Isabella's delicious white stove pipe.

There were a few exceptions, like Isabella's delicious white stove pipe. I would guess that the hats were reused from previous period films. I have not paid enough attention to the hats in the movies to have added any to my costume copies thread. Savivi - I am glad that you finally came around! I have seen that movie almost 20 times now and love it more each time still. I may have an addiction.

Pam, do you REALLY think so???
I'm more inclined to think as Cosmo does that they are banged up "wardrobe" hats.
I did have an amazing milliner friend make 3 hats for me for a local living history museum. They’d had them for two - maybe three weeks when I was scheduled to give a talk for the museum and I asked for some of the costumes and the hats to be pulled for display purposes. The wear (and I might add abuse) we discovered on these hats was shocking! And when I set up the display, the general public thought they were looking at extent garments. I had to correct them and indicate that these were from the site wardrobe and that these were basically 'new'.

I could be wrong (Lord knows it's happened often enough) but I still suspect originals. When I have a chance to watch all three again, I will be better able to articulate what gave me that impression.
I tried to contact the production company via ITV last year to inquire but they were not to be found. I'd love to know.

Please share what ever you discover. I've not had the pleasure yet of watching any of the newest Austen adaptations. I'm really looking forward to seeing them all sometime soon. I'll be sure to check out the bonnets in this one now that you've mentioned it.

I just saw the new Northanger Abby this weekend and I really enjoyed it. It was a pretty good adaptation of the book and I really enjoyed the actor who play Mr. Tilney.
