I have no idea. I LOVE Emma. I particularly enjoyed the BBC's latest version of Emma as portrayed by Romola Garai.

While I can understand why some people might be slightly annoyed with Emma's character, I can't understand how anyone can hate her. Even if it is only because you remember who wrote her, our beloved Miss Austen.
Emma's character is romantic, idealistic, and confused. She has no idea what goes on around her. She lives in the bubble of Hartfield. The problem is she is also delusional. I'm going to take a relatively more modern quote, but it works nonetheless. Emma is a "real phony," thank you Breakfast at Tiffany's. She has convinced herself into believing everything she does believe in. How can you blame her for her delusion?
Emma learns her lesson in rather harsh ways. Personally, I think that should atone her character to all of those who didn't like her. She is punished by the man she is unconsciously in love with, Mr Knightley. Yes, I believe they were in love with each other for most of the time, they were just unconscious of it.
I love Emma. BBC's latest version was absolutely splendid!

I don't hate her...she's just sheltered and arrogant and ignorant....Someone who lives their life without having to deal with much adversity doesn't understand what people go through when they do face adversity. But she is sweet and well intentioned most of the time...manners aside tact is a learned thing as well. At least she learns her lesson, and is humbled. I think most people are forgiving of characters when they get their just desserts

I don't hate it, it's simply not one of my top favorites. I never really considered it to be this great, deep story that "teaches everyone so much" as I've heard over the years. It's simply about a girl that learns to mind her own business before she meddles in others. See the log in your own eye and all that. And the actor that played Mr. Knightly, I can't recall his name right now, but he was a dreamy fellow wasn't he?

I felt for Miss Smith. I am glad things turned out well for her.
