Has anyone recreated a gown from a portrait, fashion plate, or period film? I am looking at a lot of portraits that I think represent beautiful gowns and I am not sure my construction techniques will do them justice. I would love to see any comparison photos of the real life gown and the portrait. I have seen this done with renaissance portraits but not with regency portraits. realmofvenus.renaissanceitaly.net/yourgarb/showcase.htm

Wouldn't that make a great group 'project'? Pick a portrait and make the costumes for it?
Oooh, and then have a ball to show them all off, decorated with prints of the portraits around the room.

I've only done it w/a Renaissance (Tudor gown to be exact) gown. It does sound fun to do another.

Almost all of the gowns on my dream wardrobe list are from portraits. Most of the Promenade gowns are from fashion plates. I hope to have a couple of portrait gown recreations to share this year.

I'm usually underwhelmed by most of the attempts I see to recreate outfits from historical portraits or fashion plates. Here is one I know you've seen ;D, but it always strikes me as being a VERY successful copy: www.laracorsets.com/1819_Pelisse_2007.htm

Here is a portrait of Empress Josephine that I tried to reproduce tinyurl.com/372oxvThe gown was made of a red-gold chiffon over a cotton underdress. I had a "hair accident" that day. A hit and run, of sorts.

Val - I love your interpretation. I think that is what makes portrait reproductions so interesting. I would bet that if 20 people were asked to recreate the same gown they would all be different.

Thank you! I loved the color I made it in, although the chiffon was a real bear to work with. And sewing all that gold braid on was a pain because it was so stiff, it wouldn't curve. A lot of people will probably remember me at Costume College, sewing for three days on the veil. It had a tiny 1/4 in gold trim that I whipstitched all around the 6 ft length. I decided to do the long sleeves, as it covered my upper arms better. So it was my interpretation of it. Sure would have loved her hair tho.

Hello! I made a dress based on a description of what Caroline Lamb was wearing when she met Lord Byron for the first time. Not exactly a portrait recreation but still... it was heaps of fun!

I shall have to find them I am not IN the outfit in the pics. For some reason, I never get pics IN it when I wear it!
