Would a gentleman If they had a double breasted non military 1812 cutaway pin it back on occasion or was this only reserved for military personnel? I can't recall ever seeing a picture like this... Possibly one where the coat was only buttoned by one or two buttons in the middle, with the top and bottom corners somewhat carelessly turned back, but I wouldn't swear to it. By 1812, military coats were being worn primarily buttoned across (except with the top corners of the lapels folded back to show the facing) rather than with the lapels buttoned back.

Dear timkid628;
I am so very sorry that you seemed never to have received a reply to this inquiry, nor a proper welcome from your post on the introductory board.
I don't know if you still bother to stop by, but if so I would like to humbly (and profusely) beg your pardon for not answering your posts sooner.
I'm afraid I have been away for some time for personal reasons, and have been remiss in assisting with the boards.
I assure you now that I am back in action, and very embarrassed by the time lapse in welcoming you. I do hope if you are still visiting us that you will accept this apology and consider joining us again in conversation.
As for the answer to your question, I'm afraid it goes beyond my own knowledge at this time - however, I will attempt to find the answer and get back to you as soon as possible (or perhaps someone else on the board already knows it? If so, please post as soon as you can)
Again, I humbly apologize, welcome you - and thank you for your extreme patience.
