I finally got my greatcoat (mostly) finished. The master plan is to make shoulder capes and an earlier style stand-and-fall collar and replace them as necessary, depending on the look I want. It's hard to see the details in this picture, as the coat is so dark. (The subject is looking rather tired and cranky, too.) (Oh, I've cut my hair and grown sideburns, too. I'm keeping the sideburns at least until Hallowe'en.) goblinrevolution.org/costumes/pictures/war_peace_2008/sideburns1.jpg

You cut quite a dashing figure with your costume, Goblin, and the sideburns RULE.

Alas, I can't restrain myself. When we went to the Jane Austen Ball in Pasadena, I managed to get my hair to look fashionably touseled. This plus my period spectacles and sideburns (now gone, as they looked great, but not really like me), looks very period, if I do say so myself. (More of us at goblinrevolution.org/cgi-bin/pic_index.cgi?list=indicies/lahaausten2009.index;base=costumes) We had a great time, despite this being the longest we have both been away from Master Theo to date. The young lad had loads of fun with his grandparents, though, and barely missed us. [Edited to fix URL]

Why is it every time I go to look at your photos, I get a big red bar that says error, and says it can't be found. Darn. But you look very dashing in this photo. Too bad about the 'burns.

(My hand written photo-album script still has a few rough edges.) This should work: goblinrevolution.org/cgi-bin/pic_index.cgi?list=indicies/lahaausten2009.index;base=costumesBut you look very dashing in this photo. Too bad about the 'burns. Thanks! I might grow the sideburns again some day, with proper incentive, but they're not really for every-day wear.

After decrying my lack of sewing last autumn, I did manage to get a few things done in time for the LAHA Jane Austen Ball in Pasadena, CA. Here is a picture, in which I appear to be barely awake, and my neckcloth has practically collapsed from lack of proper starching (long story). I also failed to bring my period glasses to the ball. The shirt and waistcoat are new; both are entirely handsewn, as my son has expressed a strong dislike for the sewing machine, and handsewing is much easier to take up and put down as needed. The shirt is based on an example in Thoughts on Men's Shirts in America, 1750-1900 with a two-part collar that lets the collar stand out around the face rather than be crushed in against the neck. The waistcoat is woven silk (I am particularly happy with how I was able to match the pattern on the pocket welts), with a linen back and lining. Since this picture was taken, I have added ties to the back, which help it fit a bit better.

Goblin, those shoes are wonderful.. where on earth did you find them? They are actually hand-me-downs from my wife. She says she bought them in a thrift store in the late eighties. :-) They don't fit well enough for me to actually dance in them, alas, but they certainly look right.
