Do you always wash/dry your material before making a garment? (I did for my other dress, but the thought of having to wash/dry/iron what I have in my hand is more than I can do right now!)
If not, do you get much shrinkage if hand washed and hung to dry?
Any tips for washing garments with ribbon/trim?

If it's a washable fabric, I always wash & dry the fabric before I store it on my shelf. That way when I go to use it, I don't have to try and remember if it was washed. I don't usually iron it at that time, just because I don't have time. Ok, make that lazy too. If it's a fabric that is only washed by hand, I don't prewash it. I don't do drycleaning at all. Can't stand the stuff. Chemises & drawers just go into the washing machine. For items that need hand washing after wear, I let them soak for a bit in the tub or sink with a tiny amount of a gentle soap. Then let them soak in clear water, and gently squeeze dry, or roll in a towel. I have a shower curtain rod that hangs over the center of my tub that I hang all my handwashed things to dry. We aren't allowed clothes lines out of doors here. (Silly when we have a power shortage, and clothes dryers take up a lot of electricity) For things that aren't washable, I've have hung them inside out to just air out. I've heard some people spray it lightly with Febreeze but wouldn't do that on a silk.

Realizing that I am replying to a topic that is quite old, I thought I would add a few tips!
I dislike febreeze - but I HAVE used Vodka in the past. Apparently ballerinas use it for TuTus frequently! I simply put some in a spray bottle (Check you local dollar store), and turn my garment inside out, and spray away. Always pre test - but I have never had a problem - now, keep in mind that I come from a background of Renaissance events, so my garments are a bit...sturdier than regency tends to be, but it does wonders for lifting unwanted scents out of fabrics. It dries quickly, and leaves no scent behind!
It will not lift away heavy stains, but it is great for odor control!
