So, I'm really excited about this. Portland Art Museum (PAM) has a new show right now La volupté du goût: French Painting in the Age of Madame de Pompadour PAM's description is as follows: << From the time she attained the envied position of official mistress to Louis XV in 1745 until her death in 1764, Madame de Pompadour was one of the most celebrated and active patrons of the arts. La volupté du gout (voluptuous taste), comprised of paintings created by 24 of the era’s most important artists patronized by Pompadour during an age that witnessed the birth of a public discourse in aesthetics and art criticism, reveals her legacy as the royal tastemaker of the time. Gathered from 22 international lenders, the works in this exhibition define an era of French peace, prosperity, and aesthetic pleasure for French society through scenes of mythology, literature, religion, landscapes and portraiture. >> This Sunday they have a class where one can learn drawing techniques from the paintings (all skill levels are welcome). I just signed up for this class. Also, I just got notification that this Fri there is a presentation/discussion by an art critic and author "about the world of luxury, wealth, and leisure reflected in the art of Madame de Pompadour’s time and the growth of radical new ideas about man, nature, and liberty that began in the era." Might be interesting, and I thought maybe others would like to know about it. Of course I don't know how much it will be about the art itself, or what exactly he has to share about the minutiae of 18th century society. In any case, here is a link www.portlandartmuseum.org/calendar/events/2009/03/06/Madame-De-Pompadour-In-The-Age-Of-Voltaire

Lauren is organizing an ORS costumed visit to this exhibit. I can't wait to see what she and Tara have come up with. Squee! Public displays are wonderful.

Oooo, fun! Too bad I've nothing to wear. I've been doing small simple projects on my machine, so that I can make a dress or two someday.

With the ORS, not having a costume is not considered a good reason not to join in. ::tee hee:: Besides, it will be in May, so there's plenty of time to hunt something down or make something if you insist on needing a regency gown to participate. ::hint hint:: The S&S pattern may seem hard, but as costuems go, regency gowns (at least back-closing ones) are really not that hard to do.

That's the spirit! Take away my excuses before I can get out of being social! It does look easy to make some of the regency dresses. Unfortunately it's been years since I looked at a pattern, but no worries about that yet! And I most certainly will join in the fun, even if I'm dressed down. Who can resist a trip to the museum?

Oh, I would love to go. Do you know what day in May?
I almost want to go in 18th c, rather than turn of the century.

Ooo, tea and art! I can't wait. I got to see a little of the exhibit today during the class, and it was a very nice collection. If I can get the attachment to work, I'll post a half finished sketch of one figure (apparently 2 hours is not long enough for me!!) and a fan that I got there (I love fans, I used to have a collection, and now I'm trying to build it back up again)

It's on May 9. Details are here: www.oregonregencysociety.com/events.htm#museumAnna, have you filled out an ORS enrollment form yet? If you did, I'd be spamming you constantly with updated events, and who doesn't like to be spammed consantly with regency events? ::smirk:: Go to the ORS webpage (http://www.orregency.org) and click 'Join'. The enrollment form is there to be printed or filled out and emailed back to me as an attachment... whichever is best for you.

Wow, you are quite an artist. I love how you depicted the movement of the fabric.

Wow, you are quite an artist. I love how you depicted the movement of the fabric. Thanks! The movement is actually why I picked that one to copy; very interesting to have movement in an image I'm a little out of practice, but it would be fun to start some drawings or even paintings of regency inspired scenes. Mercy, this is expensive! But I'm sure very much worth it! I love a fancy to do, and can't wait

Thanks again Lauren for arranging this get together. I wish I could have had tea as well, but I really enjoyed being with the group at the exhibit. Cheers!

HAH! At last, I have sent in the enrollment form!
It's finals, so I couldn't really have made the museum. But I hope to get there before the show leaves.

It *was* fun wasn't it? You really missd out on the tea at the Heathman. The tea-court is STUNNING. Fully paneled walls, fireplace... Augh, so lovely. The tea was two hours of chitty chatty fun.
The museum was just as fun because it was all schmoozy-time for me; my fav.
I added new events to the events page, including a new P&P stage production in town in July and the second annual picnic at pittock...

My tea & museum outfit: My hurried spencer: I made this spencer over two days... it shows, I know... but it wore well DESPITE that it was completely unlined and the sleeves and front were tucked under and hemmed with HOT GLUE. ::teehee:: I lost the scarf the first ten minutes of the day, it blew off somewhere between the parking lot and the Heathman Hotel. This is MY bonnet... I'm still in my jammies here and I went outside to take a picture before I got all disheveled from the day's hoofing about in 75ºF in a spencer. I made myself my own bonnet for once. Yay.

I loved your bonnet, by the way. Need to make one of my own. And your spencer was lovely, no matter how much you want to downplay it!
