I just saw this interesting post on Horace Walpole's Gothic masterpiece of a home, Strawberry Hill: portraitminiature.blogspot.com/2010/12/horace-walpoles-strawberry-hill.htmlI'm sorry to say it, but I really dislike the look of the exterior now that it's been restored! It's sort of like seeing the reconstructions of ancient classical statues with the wild colors -- it just looks jarring! Even if the weathered facade isn't how it looked when Walpole had it built, I think the aged, faded, and ivy-covered Strawberry Hill was much more romantic.

I'm inclined to agree. I really do like the way Strawberry Hill looked before the restoration. It has a nice romantic charm to it, and the ivy just capitalizes that. It's the type of place that inspires the imagination (in my opinion)! As for the new Strawberry Hill, it just looks so...uncreative. And certainly, the new exterior doesn't seem in place with the scenery.

Oh I agree. Why in the world would they change the outside so very much? It looks so bland. It had such character before.
