Hi everyone! I'm Lauren, I live in Chicago, IL. I'm currently studying art history at Columbia College and I REALLY love it. I've loved history as long as I can remember, but I only got into the regency era in middle school. it was my first love when it came to costume history and the first era I ever knew more about than the general public, save for ancient Egypt which was my first love when it comes to general history. I drift away from the regency era only to find myself in love with it all over again sometime later. I respect Jane Austen in a primary source sort of way, but I'm not a huge fan of her writing. I think it's easy to miss her sense of humor when you read it unless you're geared to spot it; being so old and English makes the humor a little difficult for 21st century Americans sometimes. I love the films though, I think they make her wit apparent, and I love seeing the clothing in action. so hello! let's get along!

Hello Lauren, and welcome!
Though most of us are huge Jane Austen fans, it certainly isn't a requirement to be a part of our community (though your respect is duly noted and appreciated).
I know you will find many friends among us, and our happy you have chosen to join the fold - again, welcome!

Sometimes Austen is like Shakespeare. If you read Henry V and get bogged down in Salic Law at the beginning you'd despair of ever understanding it. But just listen to it and let it wash over you and you soon find it quite easy to understand (except for the stuff about Salic Law). And when reading Emma, treat anything said by Miss Bates to be the equivalent of Elvish poetry in Tolkien. Just skip over it.
So I would suggest listening to Austen as an audio book first, before trying to read it if you find it a bit of a slog.
