I swear I've seen it both ways, but my belief is the woman curtseys, then the man bows. Can anyone confirm this?
I've been haphazard in my own writing about the order, usually doing whatever is better for the flow rather than following proper etiquette.
Thanks,
Jennifer

Hi Jennifer -
I looked through my available resources, and though the bowing probably happened rather simultaneously, it was proper etiquette for the lady to give an 'acknowledgement' first, essentially giving the gentleman permission to address her.
Hope this helps - Thea

the bowing probably happened rather simultaneously Thank you, that phrase gives me hope that I am allowed a certain latitude and after all, these are customs that are not always strictly observed, witness the odious Mr. Collins forcing his introduction upon Mr. Darcy.

Just a little bit to add: Rank or social position also play into this. - Adding to the confusion.
