The Fair at New BostonSaturday & Sunday Labor Day Weekend September 3 & 4, 2011 10 a.m. - 6 p.m. Both Days George Rogers Clark Park, Springfield, OH www.fairatnewboston.org/ Is anyone planning to attend the Fair at New Boston in September? Once again, my husband's unit is being dispatched to protect visitors at the fair from the threat of natives. I find myself in a position to be able to follow him and visit the fair as well. Last year, while the soldiers were busy practicing drills and marching, I found myself alone at the campsite listening to the chants of nearby natives. This was quite unnerving! I think it might be safer to join the groups of people at the fair this year. Perhaps if enough people are attending, we could schedule a gathering of some sort?

Miss Waterman and I will be in attendance... you may feel free to do your shopping with us if you so wish. I am also hosting a nature walk at the fair on Saturday... here's the information on that: The Doctor will be the host of a walking naturalist expedition for young and old alike that will begin from the Blackhorse Tavern (next to Cheapside) at 5 of the clock in the afternoon. The flora and fauna in and around New Boston will be our goal as we take a leisurely stroll through the woods and to the site of a lovely little creek and waterfall. The duration of said expedition will be approximately one hour and will have us back well before supper is served at 6:30 PM. All those interested in said expedition apply within. www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=135647743163790Follow the Facebook link to have a look at pictures from LAST YEAR'S trip

Doctor,
Both my husband and I would be delighted to join your excursion into the wilderness. Thank you for your kind invitation. However, my husband cannot be sure of his soldierly duties until we arrive at the fair, so he may or may not be able to attend. At any rate, I would like to attend. Please reserve one spot for myself and one possible spot for my husband, if it is not too much trouble. Do you need any further information from us?
Please let me know if you need any help in planning or preparing for the excursion. Is there anything that we could bring or prepare in advance to assist in your nature walk?

I do not know that there would be anything in particular that you would need to bring along for the walk. I would suggest a small basket of some sort in order to collect the specimens from the list that I will pass out to those in attendance.

Excellent! If you see either myself or my husband, please feel free to say hello. My actual name in Erin and his is Michael. We'll be camping at the top of the hill above the battlefield, behind the artillery and cannons, with the other encamped troops. My husband is easy to spot because of his 1790s soldier uniform and cocked hat. This is us, pictured below.

The Fair at New Boston is less than a week away. I'm getting excited! The weather forecast says it may storm on Saturday and Sunday, let's hope it doesn't.

I do not think it gets more enjoyable than a day of visiting friends and shopping at New Boston. Add to that a dinner, dance and a visit to the tavern and a more perfect day could not be had. I am starting to grow impatient for the weekend!

I'm hoping that the shoemaker's elves come in the middle of the night and prepare everything for me. It could happen, right?
*Edit* Apparently the elves don't do ironing. I woke up this morning and my ironing pile was still there. I need to have a word with them...

I hope everyone make it home from New Boston safely. We were camping at the fairgrounds, which was quite the experience once the bad storms started rolling through on Saturday night. The wind blew over many of our fellow campers tents and there was a lightning strike close by that downed a tree. Once our neighbors tent blew off and landed on top of our tent, we retreated to our wagon to sleep. It was an exhausting and a throughly wet night. Thankfully, no one was hurt at the fair.
They also announced at the Fair that Saturday was the hottest temperature on record for that day in Springfield OH. Weather aside, I'm glad we went. The Fair at New Boston is one of the best living history events around in my opinion. The sutlers are some of the finest in the area. Also, spending the day with good friends and catching up with old friends that I don't get to see often can't be beat.
Doctor - My apologies for leaving your nature excursion early. We had to run to help secure the campsite before the storms started. Thank you for your hospitality.

It looks like the Oregon folks of Le Bon Ton made it back safely and were welcomed wonderfully by the RSATN members among others. It looks like an AMAZING event. I will have attempt to make it out there next year. Too bad I can't bring my horse.
