Greetings, I would like to take the opportunity to introduce myself. My name is Joseph Harney, and I am a historical reenactor located in the San Francisco Bay Area. My main focus is British military uniforms from 1748-1918, with especial emphasis on Nelson era Royal Navy Uniforms (1795-1812) and the Cardwell Reforms of the late Victorian era. (1881-1901). Stranded out here on the west coast, there is not much Napoleonic/war of 1812 reenactment going on, so finding such a wonderful Regency era community such as this is a splendid treat. Warmest Regards, Joseph Harney Captain Sir Thomas Cappel HMS Phoebe www.dickensfair.com

Captain, are you not able to participate with BAERS or Peers? You are always welcome to come up the coast and join us at the ORS anytime. Steph

Steph,
I partcipate in both PEERS and BAERS (though BAERS has had the tremendous misfortune this year of being scheduled when I already have a prior commitment), as Captain Sir Thomas Cappel, Captain of HMS Pheobe.
And while both groups are wonderful and delightful, they are not military reenactment type events, with all the associated gun powder smells and loud bangs.
I do have the most pleasurable opportunity of commanding the Royal Navy Gun Contingent from the HMS Siren at the Vallejo Pirate Festival, though it is suppose to be a GAPiracy-era event, we've taken some liberties at Government House in order to "make do".
Regards, Joseph Harney Sir Thomas Cappel HMS Phoebe

Welcome!
I'm also located in Northern CA and wish there were more reenactment events in the area. We are a bit far north to join in BAERS and PEERS events.

Captain, Ah. I see. I too am always on the hunt for activities that would be more enticing for the participation of the gentlemen. We have our King's Navy group here locally, however they are not at all interested in doing anything alongside our Regency group. They are mostly interested in doing the pirate festival and doing things inside their own group. It's been an impossible challenge to find people who can spearhead some military activities alongside our group and bring in the cannons and black powder, gold braid and cockades... I *wishwishwish* there were some 'doers' around here like The Major and The Doctor to light the fire of interest in the gents around the state of Oregon in early regency to regency period military reenactment. Here you are, a perfect candidate to spearhead something like that, and you're in SF. ARGH! So frustrating! I've threatened to kidnap some of the above mentioned gentlemen simply for that purpose. ::sighs, defeated:: Steph

Chuckle, Steph, there was pirating (er “privateering”) and lots of smuggling, on the seas during the Napoleonic Wars/War of 1812. You just need to convince your pirates to which era they are swashbuckling and for which “good” cause. They needn’t be Captain Kidd or Frances Drake - they can be Jean Lafitte or involved in the First Barbary War. (1801-1805)
Welcome Captain.

Steph,
I completely understand your situation and your frusturation. Unfortunately, Because of the popularity of Austen and his contemporaries, most of the Regency Societies out there do "High Society" type events, such as teas, picnics, and period dancing. That unfortunately tends to lack appeal to the "military types" who tend to be attracted to the pirate festivals and such things that mainly involve boobs, beer, and explosions.
Our "compromise" solution for the NorCal Pirate Festival in Vallejo is "Government House". At Government House, we Portray the historical events of 1718, when Governor Woodes Rogers arrives in Port Nassau to return the wayward colony back the King's Justice. We issue out the King's Pardons to patrons, and interject as much "historosity" as possible into a totally complete fantasy shingdig. This is Gold Age of Piracy of course, and unfortunately not Regency.
Your Obd't Servants, Joseph Harney Captain Sir Thomas Cappel HMS Phoebe
