Well, here's a review from a newbie to the story! Having not read the book OR seen previous screen versions, I went into it literally not knowing *what* to expect, other than that diehard Jane fans weren't thrilled with it. I really enjoyed watching it. I'm a huge fan of angst ;D, so I liked how gloomy and depressing it was. I loved her looking directly into the camera. A tad overdone a few times, maybe, but I found that it really helped me to connect with her and feel her pain. Yeah, he seemed a little "out of her league", but I just loved that he was able to see past exterior nonsense, and appreciate her strength and sensibility. HAVING SAID ALL THAT. In the end, I have to agree that this adaptation failed to do much more than briefly entertain and divert. The running around Bath didn't irritate me on the "purist" level that it offended many fans of the era ;D, however, I am just so OVER that whole cliche obligatory "chase down the one I love before they get away" scene that Hollywood thinks EVERY chick flick needs. THE KISS *should* have been right up my alley....normally I'm a sucker for any sort of absurdly drawn out romanticism like that! ;D However, it just ended up bugging me cuz it looked like SHE was the one wanting to kiss HIM...not a mutual thing. And the tacked on scenes afterwards...bah...anticlimatic. So I guess I enjoyed the buildup, and if the ending had been effective enough, I could have forgiven the lack of any real characterization. But while I found the viewing basically satisfactory, when it was over I just felt indifferent....not at all invested in the characters, or permanently enamoured of them and their story. (so...uh.....how *does* the book end it?! lol)

Oh Lady Serendipity, you tease putting the picture of my favorite scene from Emma on your post! I really liked Jeremy Northam in that. Val
