A Regency Picnic at the Berry Botanic Gardens Sunday, August 17, 2008 11:30 AM - 2:30 PM Because this is a private event at a private location, we ask that attendees pay $5 per person upon arrival, which is the standard admission fee for the botanic gardens. Bring a picnic basket, a nice throw for the ground,, a parasol, refreshments; games, whatever you'd like. Also bring a bit of cash, because we're holding another raffle for Regency goods as well as a prize for best costume. Regency costume is of course encouraged, so bring out your daywear--and bonnets are always a right remedy against the sun. What you pack in must be packed out. We also encourage all picnickers to carpool if possible, parking is limited! Only 15ish spaces! No RSVP required, however if you drive a roomy minivan or SUV and are able to offer another member a ride; or if you are seeking a lift to the picnic, go to Carpool Match NW; and register. Other members can find one another through the service. www.orregency.org

Hopefully there will be more of this in my area before too long.

They are surprisingly easy to arrange... So are teas. They require little to no major effort on your part (food, etc..)... all you need to do is solicit donations for a raffle.

Me too. It's our first full year of events. I started the ORS in December but it took until August for me to hold the first event.
I can't wait for the ball. It's going to be so lovely. Our chef has already submitted two very nice menus for both the Ainsworth event and the Ball. AND I'm on the hunt for a live band.

My Dear Allseeing,
A Midsummer Night's Dream Masquerade really looks like a wonderful event that will hold a lot of fun. My compliments to whomever came up with the idea. Bravo! Ever since I saw the movie Ever After I have wanted to do something like this in a Regency/Federalist era setting.
Unfortunately I have semi-committed to another event that weekend or I would like to attend this, I already know the Masquerade will be more fun. Now I really wish I lived on the west coast just so I could attend all these wonderful events. My hat is off to you, Mum.

Thank you Major. It was my idea, ::buffs knuckles on her sweater:: I'm a Shakespeare lover, and I've always wanted to do a masquerade with gauzy wings and masks, with a touch of that venetian class... Heh heh. The gardens at Ainsworth House are immaculate, and very English in style, with lots of fountains and bird baths, and roses and windy, mossy paths. There's a nice ballroom and a dining room... and the old roman revival house, which is small but pretty. It's the perfect location. Last August, we opened the doors to the dance-hall, and people strolled about the gardens, and took pictures on the bench-swing... I will probably buy some chinese lanterns for the exterior, and our new member/chef has set up a very summery buffet menu. We're also looking at possibly holding a mask and wing-making workshop in June. It's okay though, we will have plenty of other events you can consider that will be just as fun and creative, Major. I wish you were here, frankly, because there are few movers and shakers of your caliber here to help out with events, and seeing the success of your event, I selfishly want that energy here! LOL. But you'd have to leave a core group of reenactors behind, who appreciate you greatly--So kidnapping you is out of the question I suppose. ::::pouty sigh::::. Oh well. I think what we *Should* strive for, and I'm directing this to all of you Regency maniacs on this board, is to host a nation-wide (or even international) RSA event somewhere in the next couple of years. Organize one in a super-spectacular location that will make it impossible not to buy the tickets to get there. If not a huge ball at some great big gorgeous mansion and a weekend of 100% regency living, perhaps a group trip to Bath and England... I know these are lofty goals, but other groups do it. If JASNA can get people to fly to Canada for a weekend, why couldn't we? /S

Another great idea. My compliments.

I would love to do a national event! I always thought it would be glorious to visit Europe in full costume. To prance around historical places :-) I guess it's the romantic in me, but if I ever get to again, I will definately bring at least one costume :-)

I hope this is the right place, and someone sees it here: I was watching tv tonite on BBC America, and the PBS station made an announcement about a Jane Austen Regency Afternoon Tea to be held in Seattle, WA, on Aug 17 & 24. I don't know anything about it, other than what's on this website. www.kcts9.org/node/22592I sure wish I could have been here in WA during that time. Darn.

Oh, you were all so pretty! And that is a beautiful place to have a picnic. I was at a picnic too, on the lawns of our downtown Administration building. Then we walked across the street to the San Diego Maritime Museum, and took a tour of the ships, the Star of India, the Berkeley, and the Medea. *EXCEPT* we were in Steampunk costumes. I'm in the black skirt, gold vest, black top hat. Capt Arabella Cox, Cartographer & Time Travel Agent "Anywhere, Anytime!* www.flickr.com/photos/26036741@N00/?saved=1
