I cannot decide which pattern to use for my stays. I don't know which years are the most appropriate for me. I don't want to make stays that don't match my gown. There seems to be much conflicting information on when ladies wore what style of stays, or even if they wore any at all.

A related question to Cosmo's....
I feel intimidated already by making a dress, so I think stays are out of my league right now. If I was going to pay someone to make some or buy them pre-made, what is the ballpark price?
I think I remember finding some online for around $300. That is probably out of my budget, unfortunately.
If I was going to purchase them, would you recommend a transitional stay length, short stays or a long stay with busk. It sounds like Steph is pretty pleased with her "Busk of Frankenstein" alteration, so now I'm wondering if long stays would be best.
For now I'm using my modern, nylon full-length strapless bra from my wedding gown ::gasp!:: (But it sure is comfortable!) ;D

If you are busty I would recommend long stays. They will help you get the girls up where you want them to be and keep them there. If you are not busty then you could chose which ever you like. The short stays are "better" for wearing for really long amounts of time since there are closer to fitting like a modern bra I think you would be less irritated by them. Personally I love my busk. I also want to say that if you wanted to attempt to make them yourself they are not so very challenging for a beginner. I would just not attempt it if you are short on time. The commercial patterns are fairly straightforward and there are enough people here to help you out if you have questions.
