I'm going to be making a cotton Romantic era dress, using TV 455, for our upcoming Dickens Fair in Riverside, CA on Feb 2 & 3. It can get pretty cold in the morning and evening, but is fairly warm in the daytime, hence the cotton dress. I'd like to make something to keep me warm in but really don't want to make a fitted pelisse. Would a cloak/cape be appropriate? Has anyone seen any pics to share? Or a pattern? Thanks, Val

Cloaks are entirely appropriate.

Hmm, not sure about a cloak. What about a heavy wrap or shawl? Perhaps in wool or something similar?

They used shawls in that period. I cannot see why not. All that cotton and muslin must ahve been bone-chilling in the winter. I read somewhere that women of that period died of pneumonia all the time.

Thank you Dawn. That's what I needed, a photo of how the collar would look. I guess I should have checked ebay first. I do have a pattern that I think I could use for it. I have a shawl already but it's very lightweight and more for show than warmth. I'm hoping to find some fabric I can use with one of my JoAnn's coupons. If not, I'll look elsewhere. No time to go to the Los Angeles Garment District. Val

Here are two images of P&P Cloaks. I noticed someone mentioned them on LJ

The silk cloak that Jane wears in the picture Cosmo has posted is very similar to the "hooded stole" In "Period Costume for Stage and Screen" and also very similar to the cloak offered in "Fitting and Proper".

I just saw a couple similar on the Beckinsale "Emma". Now I need to watch a little later period movie to see what they were wearing. Let me show you what I'm making, using the TV pattern. I want to do sleeves similar to what Lauren did in this photo. www.pbase.com/cinnamonhrts/image/74004675 The tops of the sleeves are "smocked" so they lay flat, and then have fullness below it.

Yes yes yes! That's exactly what I was looking for! And I don't have to sit and watch the whole movie again. Thank you so much!! I'm heading out the door now to drive up to Pasadena, where we're going to be helping decorate the floats for the Rose Parade on New Year's Day. I'll be back late Tues night, so we can continue this conversation then. But I'm excited now to start looking for the fabric. I did take a look at JoAnn's yesterday. *bleh* Val

I'm heading out the door now to drive up to Pasadena, where we're going to be helping decorate the floats for the Rose Parade on New Year's Day. Lucky you helping with the floats. I am an Ohio State fan so the rose bowl and the Rose Parade have always been a part of my New Years day celebration. It is Silly that I was living in LA for almost four years and never even made it to see the parade. Have a great time.

The red cloaks worn by Kitty and Lydia in the 1995 P&P are based on a period illustration of "The Lord of the Manor and his family going to a dinner party". (The Making of Pride and Prejudice has the original illustration, and says that it "appears in all the big costume books about the period".

What color do you think would be "age appropriate" for a 53 year old? I LUV the red but, you know... I'm leaning towards a hunter green or navy. That is, IF I can find something in those colors. **Edited to add- just looked at the photo from W & D again, and I HAVE to find the lavender one! *Had a wonderful time at the parade! Our float was the Nativity, near the end of the parade, by The Lutheran Hour. We're going to do it again next year. It was a lot of fun! " Val ;D

Jewel tones or hunter tones would probably work nicely, however you should try and at least get it to coordinate with your gown.

OOohh, that's pretty.
That cape in a golden brown (solid) close to the tone of the flowers is a neutral and will go with other things as well.
