Ok, I must admit, just reading this posts are getting my wheels churing. I'm really starting to want to make my own regency gown. My problem??? I've never sewn anything in my life. I came close once. My daughter needed a costume and I had to make it. Fortunatly, someone introduced me to something called....(ok, don't laugh)...... "No Sew Glue"!! (I said don't laugh!!) ;DThe costume was litterally glued together!!! That is about the extent of my sewing experience. So, how much experience do you need? I have a sewing machine, but I don't know the difference between the needle and the bobbin. (Whatever a bobbin is!)
But is it hard to do? Is it something I can learn to do in a fair amount of time or does this take years to learn? I'm pretty crafty and have somewhat of an artistic flair, but sewing is never something I was ready to conquer. But, you have inspired me.

Sewing is really quite easy to learn especially if you have a sewing machine. I have my machine instruction manual and my Reader's Digest New Complete Guide to Sewing by my machine at all times for any questions. I made some little elastic waist skirts when I was in High School with no training or experience. I just bought a cheap machine, no pattern, sat down and played with it until I got it looking like what I wanted. Then I went to design school and had 4 years of construction classes. All you need is to be able follow directions. I would say you could do something decent in a weekend without too much trouble.
If you start with a simple to work with pattern like Sense and Sensibility's patterns are said to be you should be able to work it out pretty easily. And you can always ask questions here if you need to.

All they taught me in home ec was how to thread the machine, load the bobbin and sew a straight stitch. They also showed me how to cut and understand a pattern. If you can follow directions, you're probably goign to be fine.
It's really not rocket science, and Cosmo is right, the S&S Regency pattern is definitely a great place to start, it's pretty simple.
Go to your local sewing center and see if they have a beginner's class. You can learn the basics there and then strike out on your own. Start with something small, and then work up to the gown.
It's not a hard thing to do, and if you're crafty, you'll take right to it.

Thanks for the encouraging words. I think I'll give it a try. Perhaps I'll start with a pillow case. Ha-ha!!! If I mess that up to bad, I'll just stick with shopping. Thanks!
