Who do you think of as being Regency Fashion Icons? I think that is very helpful to have icons in mind while designing clothes whether modern clothes or historical.
I of course think of Empress Josephine (who inspired my daughters middle name) and then there is Madame Recamier. My taste tends to lean slightly more towards the French style. Are there any particularly fashionable English ladies? Are there any other French ladies that I haven't made notice of? I don't want to neglect anyone.

Marie Antoinette was the one who supposedly decided to get rid of the huge georgian gowns and who spearheaded the simpler muslin look that ushered in the regency style; "[Marie Antoinette] began to institute changes in the modes of court, with the approval of the king. Some changes, such as the abolition of segregated dining spaces, had already been instituted for some time and had been met with disapproval from the older generation; more importantly was the abandonment of the wide-hooped panniers and heavy make-up for less make-up and plainer clothing, such as polonaises and, more famously, the muslin dresses which were captured by a 1783 Lebrun portrait of the queen. " It wasn't quite the regency look then--but definitely a predecessor. The gowns were fuller, and the waistline not quite so high, but it's getting there. "Fashion in the period 1795-1820 in European and European-influenced countries saw the final triumph of undress or informal styles over the brocades, lace, periwigs, and powder of the earlier eighteenth century. In the aftermath of the French Revolution, no one in France wanted to appear to be an aristocrat," (preventing further beheadings of blue-bloods, I'll wager! I'm not sure about fashion icons for women. I'd go to portraits by Ingres or other period artists of the English and French aristocracy. I think this portrait is particularly nice: I personally like the 1798-1815(ish) period styles most. They were still not so fussy.

Ingres and David and Gerard all do wonderful paintings of fashion, which is of course how I found out about Mme Recamier. Ingres has always been a favourite of mine. I love the Odalisque.
