What: Fort Meigs War of 1812 Costume Conference When: April 18th and 19th Where: Fort Meigs in Perrysburg, OH
Learn about fashions, the common man's accouterments, and many other topics. Knowledgeable presenters will discuss many facets of men and women's clothing of the time period. Highlights include a tour of Fort Meigs, period merchants, 1812 fashion and an optional Sunday clothing workshop. Call (800) 283-8916 to register.
Friday April 17th 7pm-11pm Social Evening filled with dancing, games and food
Saturday April 18th 8am Registration and check in 9am Fashion Show to be presented by Betsy Bashore - See reproductions of extant examples of clothing. Commercial patterns and a candid evaluation of their sizing, instruction, and fit will be discussed. 10:15am Sex and the (1812) City presented by Tim Crumrin-Discover the sexuality and morals prevalent in the Early Republic. They may not be quite what you would think! 11am Shop 'till You Drop- Be sure to use this break to visit the vendors set up in the Visitor Center: Kannik's Korner, Regency Revisited, Smoke & Fire Co., Spencer's Mercantile. 12pm Lunch Break- Catered boxed lunches are available for an additional $10 from Premier Catering. There is a lunchtime presentation. Traveling off-site for lunch is not recommended. Plan to bring a packed lunch if you do not request a boxed lunch on your registration form. 12:30pm Seasonal Foods and Their Preservation in the Early 19th Century presented by Susan Odom- Learn about the seasonal foods in the Early Republic and the preservation techniques used during this time. 1:45pm Army Uniforms: 1810-1813 by James Kochan- Learn about the transitional uniforms of the U.S. Army between 1810 and 1813 and take a look at the clothing people wear to portray this time period. 3:30pm The War of 1812 in Popular Culture by Ken Osen- See how Hollywood has portrayed the War of 1812 in movies and on TV. Are the images seen in the PBS special correct?.
Sunday April 19th Sewing Workshops from 9am to 4:30pm 12:30pm-4:30pm Sewing 101 - Erick Osen - $10.00 Learn how to "read" a pattern and decipher the markings and terminology associated with it. Basic hand-sewing techniques will also be taught. Great for the novice seamstress or tailor! 9am-4pm Kannik's Korner Waistcoat Workshop - Kathleen Kannik - $45.00 (includes pattern) - This hands-on workshop will include fitting and assistance in altering the forthcoming Kannik's Korner pattern KK-4202 Man's Single-Breasted Waistcoat, 1790-1815. Construction techniques will cover welt pockets, applying interfacing and stay tape, and pad stitching collars. See the registration form for more details.
