So in some grand experiment; I tore apart my long stays the other day. I am 'Frankensteining' it into a busked corset. I had to take a lot of time to remove the boning in the front since I had sewn it in through the buckram channel.
I literally cut off the grommets in one long strip on each side, and then cut the back open and sewed them onto the back. I widened the neckline, narrowed the straps, (it's not bound yet) and I sewed a pocket for a paintstick tonight, and tried it on as a trial run.
All I have to say is ...
O....
M....
G....
This is the way a stays is supposed to be. It's INFINITELY more comfortable than any other stays I have. My girls have beautiful separation. My dresses even fit differently; no awkward things poking out at the top, the busk lies snug against me, and I move very freely. It is incredible. I have now fully resolved to make myself a new set of stays as Cosmo made. The Frankenstein one will have to do until I have time to do this, but I had to share (although I hear little snaps as I sit down where the grommet strips are sewn on) ::tee hee::

I am so glad that you are pleased with the busk. I was certain you would be. You must come over and work on the long stays with me before I move!

Incidentally; what are the plans for your move, Cosmo? When, where, what, why, how?
