I want to make a gown with an embroidered net overlay. I have seen several examples of this in different books and I have a book of period embroidery patterns to guide me. However, I can not locate anyone selling a silk or cotton net material of the fine gauge necessary. Do any of you ladies have a source?

The last time I was actually in the Stratford (Ontario) Farthingales shop (she’s mail order and you have to make an appointment to be allowed to visit) she had net imported from France and made on the original looms. It was extremely expensive. I can’t recall if it was silk or cotton.
You could buy cotton mosquito netting – which isn’t really too expensive to make a “first version” of your net gown and then when you actually come across the finer netting, make a second gown (and sell the first!). Washing the mosquito netting will take out the sizing and it will shrink a little too.
An original net gown (in black with embroidery in silver!) is in the collection of the National Society of Colonial Dames of America in Boston. It’s not as fine a net as you might think – though it’s not a thick heavy net either.

Cathy Hay (harmanhay on Livejournal) is duplicating an 1890s dress that involves silk net. I don't know where she found hers but you could email and ask her, or see if she mentioned in her LJ.
