After shopping with Steph the other day I have come to the conclusion that I need to make some modern clothes for myself. Then this was reinforeced by some posts on LiveJournal. I am tired of dressing like a mom. For all of you costume people do you make modern clothes for yourselves as well? What would you make if you were going to make some stuff? I am thinking dresses and skirts and ruffly blouses. I am not sure that I want to make trousers, because I never have any that fit me properly. It is just a weird idea for me to do this because other than my wedding gown, I have only made clothes for models.

I am surprised to find that no one sews for themselves. I plan to, you already know that. I have a hard time finding summery shirts that fit me properly... my next few sewing projects will include a couple of those.

I've found it's not worth my time and money. I can get adequate modern clothes for less than it would cost me in materials, let alone time, so I spend my time making things I can't get any other way.
That said, I've worn my Victorian vest with my modern tuxedo, and last year I made a matching bowtie (which is itself in no way Victorian).
I can also see as how the case might be different for a woman, given the state of women's clothes today.

You have such easier to fit bodies and clothing that comes in sizes that make sense instead of arbitrary numbers like 00.

When I was younger my mother would make all sorts of clothes for me, mostly dresses and suit sets or cute ruffly tops but now I find it just easier to go out an buy something.
I have such a hard time getting patterns to fit me right. Im a ready to wear size 8 but usually have to cut a pattern to a 14 or 16. Its actually kind of a downer for me haha I would much rather be that size 8!

I agree with the others. I'm barely able to make my costumes, much less have the time and patience to make my modern clothes. Although sometimes I'm so frustrated with the clothing that's being sold, either the colors, fabrics, or styles, that I say to myself I should just make something. But then reality sets in. Most of the clothing I see is either stretchy & skin tight, which even a size 18 looks like a petite small (thankyouverymuch!) or they look like sacks. I think they've gotten a little carried away with using Spandex to save fabric. I've been laughing lately over the new babydoll-style blouses, which we wore in the 70s. They looked like maternity blouses. I have to admit I did buy a couple, but the fabric patterns on them are not flattering at all. But when you need something cool to wear, that's all I have to choose from. PERSONAL RANT! Why do they make clothing in polyesters and Spandex, when our weather is usually in the 90s-100, and even has been 80 during this Winter? Don't they have a CLUE how to make cooler clothing? *getting off soap-box*

That is what mos people want especially in the current discount store shopping economy. I am assuming that you are not shopping at high end stores because there they would usually use Rayon which breathes really well. *By they I mean we, being that I used to design for Mossimo for Target.

You're right, both Kohl's and JC Penneys & Macy's are not really high end, but they're the closest places to me. I don't shop at Target or K-Mart for clothes, as they don't last thru one washing. I plan on doing some summer clothes shopping in Kauai in a couple weeks tho. *They* know how to dress properly for hot/humid weather.

I sew things like sun dresses and skirts a lot. I have a couple of vintage 30s patterns i want to try out, soon. I also am notorious for making my regency era dresses as everyday dresses
