I couldn't find it addressed anywhere more than just casually on the forum, so I thought I'd ask....
What can anyone tell me about the sport of fencing during the Regency period? Did it exist as a sport/activity for gentlemen? Are there any sources you can point me to, either on-line or book titles?
I thank you gentlemen, and ladies, in advance for your kind help!

I see you are in Nebraska, I know a gentleman from this website they may have some information to share with you about this. I'm pretty sure fencing was a form of exercise during the Regency...lol but my "knowledge" comes from the BBC version of P&P with Colin Firth, he's fencing with a master right before he says "I shall conquer this!" And Regency House Party, the gentlemen were taught to fence as a part of the exercise routine. www.facebook.com/AcademiaDuellatoriaHope that helps!

I know it existed, just not how widely used it was at the time. I always assumed boxing was more of a pastime during the regency era. I even tried to find something on google, but there was no detailed answer.

I missed this before! The Regency Society of Virginia had a Regency swordsmanship demonstration at the end of April. In short, the Regency period was part of the era when fencing was becoming more formalized as a sport rather than exclusively as a means of self-defense (or offense!). Our workshop was led by Maitre d'Armes Walter Green and he has posted pictures and an outline of his presentation to us on his website. There's some good information on there that might answer some of your questions or, at the very least, point you in the right direction for the answers! -uHf

It looks remarkably like what we wore when I dabbled in fencing at college. The biggest difference I can see is that the jacket doesn't come down far enough to protect the "family jewels".
