I was wondering if any of you knew the protocol for wearing them, on movies and shows and fashion plates sometimes they are worn and sometimes not...??

Chemisettes are day wear. During the day necklines tended to be higher, or more filled in. More of the skin was covered to help protect it from the sun, helping to keep that oh so desirous pale complexion.. Necklines lowered and were more open into the evening.

Chemisettes and fichus are the daytime cover-up for a low neckline in your gown.

Also worth noting that there are a couple of Diana Sperling's sketches that seem to show chemisettes (or possibly habit-shirts?) being worn by some older/married women at dinner, even in company.
