A random tidbit I discovered: in 1804 a Mrs. Alicia Thornton formally raced at York against a Captain William Flint for a wager of 1000 guineas (although the three web pages I found all had slightly different amounts). She was in the lead until her horse went lame, and did it all sidesaddle. She later raced on a number of other occasions.
There is an excellent picture on pp. 132-133 of What Life was Like in Europe's Romantic Era (a Time-Life book I wouldn't otherwise recommend).
