Okay, I being a P&P fanatic have watch them back to back and have noticed that Keira totally copies Jennifer's Elizabeth. I thought she was totally unoriginal. Though, I guess that is a compliment to Jennifer. This is not to say I didn't enjoy the one that Keira was in, but it disappointed me that she could bring her own personality into Elizabeth's character. Did anyone else notice this?

You know, imo she did both....I liked the ways she was LIKE J.E.'s Elizabeth....and I liked the ways she was different. I enjoyed the different take on the story (different Darcy, different Bennet household, etc), BUT, I think I would have been disappointed if she was TOO different from J.E. Cuz come on....J.E. WAS Elizabeth Bennet, lol! I'm not a K.K. fan, and was NOT looking forward to her depiction....but I thought she did a good job!
(and by the way, I love your avatar! Having watched part one of P&P this last weekend has fanned the smoldering embers of my Lizzie-love! I'm all a-fire for her again, lol!)
NOW, along the lines of your original observation, here is what always struck ME---
I was an English major/fan of Jane Austen/fan of the old black and white P&P, loooong before the A&E version came around.
And when it did, what surprised *me* was *how* much Jennifer E. seemed to resemble and borrow from *Greer Garson* in her depiction of Elizabeth!!!
So first Greer....then Jennifer...then Keira? All I know is, I love them all. Elizabeth Bennet is my favorite all-time "character" (literary or otherwise), and I thought they were each lovely as her.

There is a black and white version?! I need to find myself a copy of that so I can watch it. That is interesting that Jennifer took from the version before her. I adore Elizabeth! Best female character.

Best female in P&P. I'm still a big Anne Elliott fan.

Best female character. www.amazon.com/Pride-Prejudice-Greer-Garson/dp/6304508573People hate that version because the costumes are compleeeetely incorrect, lol! And it does play a little free and easy with a few of the plot points, ha! And, it's definitely "Pride and Prejudice LITE", but, I think they did a good job getting the story and the characters in there! This version will always be a sentimental favorite of mine. However, like many of the classic old movies, this one does show its age! It's corny and silly. I have to confess that I watched it a few weeks ago, and for the first time failed to be completely charmed. Maybe I would never have loved it at all, if I had seen the more serious interpretations first. So I'm not sure how much you might or might not enjoy it. However, if you're a true P&P addict, it's at least worth a view! Olivier is a wonderfully brooding Darcy, Blingley is delightful, his sister masterful in her superiority, Mr. Collins is the comic relief (complete with his own theme music!), and Jane is just as pretty as you think she should be! You might be able to check it out from a library...just a thought! And YES, I'd be interested to hear whether or not you'd agree that J.E. did owe something of her Lizzie to Greer Garson!

I'll check the local libraries and get back to you after I have watched it. I'm excited to see another version of P&P.
There is another BBC version of P&P that I own from 1980, that I liked. Though I haven't watched it in a while since the 1995 one is by far my favorite. I should watch and see if that one is similar to the others.

I love both the 1995 and the 2005 versions of P&P. One thing I really liked about the 2005 version is the sense of family. It was heartwarming.

I am a very happy person when new costume movies come out, even if I am protective of Jane's works but... P & P 2005 was so horrible, in my opinion. I won't go into all the reasons why but, suffice it to say, my normal self control against making disgusted noises in theaters slipped several times in this one. The guy writing the review for the PI behind me found it amusing and talked to me a bit after the film finished!

I actually thought the delivery of lines in the 2005 version was so monotonous, I could hardly stand it.
Now the rain scene, where Darcy tells her he loves her, and she says she hates him, but they're STILL about to kiss -- THRILLING. I could watch that part over and over again. (And no need to mention the fact that Wickham's GORGEOUS with a big YUMMMMMMMM).
As for the Laurence Olivier one (I think he's Darcy... I'm pretty sure!) If I watch it as a movie that has nothing to do with Jane Austen, I enjoy it.

I've seen the old b&w P&P at some point, but it's been years. I think I need to revisit it.
I was vastly disappointed by the lack of JA on Sunday.
