I'm Christy. My husband (Goblin, esq.) and I have been doing English country dance with BAERS since we first stumbled over a mention of the group online and showed up at one of their 2nd Friday of the Month (plain clothes) dance practices. This would be about five years ago, before we were married. We were lured to attend one of their costume balls (they do three a year) and the chance to dance, dress up in costume and have silly/civilized fun was irresistable. We were hooked. We liked the group so much, we eventually became the dance managers for the 2nd Friday practices.
Locally, we have a lot of groups that do costuming (fantasy, lots and lots of Victorian, some SCA and Ren Faire, etc...) a lot of groups that do country dance (and contra dance, and Scottish country, and morris, etc...) and even a couple that do costume balls. But I relish the opportunity to delve into this very interesting, somewhat misunderstood period in history. I really like the people we've met through the organization and hope to continue doing it for some time to come.
February of this year, I presented my husband with a proverbial "pledge of my affection". DS heard country dance tunes all through my pregnancy and one of the only sure ways to comfort him in the early days when he was colicky was to sing or hum "The Lass of Richmond Hill" which is one of my favorite dancing tunes. Odds are good that he will never lack for dancing partners.
My particular areas of interest are period food, dancing and building my still somewhat lacking skills in costuming.
I'm really glad we've found this board. Thanks to the RSA for setting this up!
