Hello,
I have been lurking on this forum for a short while and thought it time to join and introduce myself. First, I must confess that the Regency period was not my first interest per se, rather came later. The seed was planted in High School when I 'had' to read a JA novel. I liked the book and most everything about it including the time period, but wasn't into "that sort of thing" at the time. Nor is the Regency period my only interested time period and locale, but it includes my time period.
My introduction to the Regency period came from my being a living history enthusiast starting in the early Romantic period and then the War of 1812 period. I volunteer at a reconstructed 1820's fort here on the Great Plains, and I also travel to War of 1812 events (because there isn't any Wo1812 locally). I have been in War of 1812 living history for about 15 years, with fur trade a few years before that.
Several years into my participation with the Wo1812 living history, I saw the P&P mini-series and was hooked on both the Regency/Federalist era. This may sound unusual coming from a man, but I'm something of a romantic. I am definitely enamored with the JA films. I must also confess that I am not a literary giant. Being an engineer by modern profession, I don't do much pleasure reading. However, I have most of the JA DVD's and others from the era that I watch every chance I get (Jane Eyre, Sharpe, Hornblower, etc). So you could say that I am an enthusiast of the eras known as Regency, Empire (french), and Federalist, I enjoy period dress social occasions and outings, and hope this is all acceptable to this forum.
As you may have guessed, in my Wo1812 living history I am an American officer and a gentleman with the rank of Major. I command light troops during the day, am a member of my division officers mess and attend the mess and Ball in the evenings. At most Wo1812 events, the dancing at the Ball usually consists of mostly reels with a few Contra dances and the occasional Waltz.
At the fort we have taught ourselves a few English Country dances in the past, but I fear that it has been so long that I would not remember them. Being an above novice Contra dancer, I should hope that I could pick it back up quickly if the opportunity presented itself. I recently joined a local relatively new JASNA regional group. So recent in fact, I have not had the pleasure of attending any of their outings or activities yet. Other than that, I don't believe there is a Regency group near by so I try to take a few extra days and attend what I can when I travel back east to Wo1812 events.
While my schedule may not allow me to be a consistent poster, I look forward to making your acquaintances and discussing all things from the era. I hope an American officer will be welcome in your society. Being stationed at a frontier post, I do so long for polite society.
