I have helped put together a version of the first one and still own that dress. I can provide pictures of the construction of mine and advice on assembling it to any one who is interested.

That would be amazing, Sarah! I'm sure a number of us would be interested in learning how you put your gown together

I would love to have a version of the first dress. I've really been wanting a simple, white 1790s gown lately. I keep looking at David's portrait of Madame Seriziat. Simple, 1790s classicism-inspired gowns are my favorite.
I have a gown that is very similar to the first one, except that it has a round neckline, instead of a cross-over. My gown is also a wedgewood blue color. The gown is a copy of an extant gown from around 1795. The back of the dress is pleated onto the back bodice and only the back bodice is lined. The front of the gown is gathered onto drawstring ties at the neckline and waistline. Though, I imagine that with a crossover neckline, you can't do the drawstring ties that my gown has.

Although now that I look at the first gown, it appears the waist line is gathered onto a tie somehow. How do you do a crossover and a gathered waistband with ties?

I must say, even though it's from late Regency that second dress made me gasp a little with it's preciousness!!! Although if I were to make this dress I think I'd keep the top more simple and just embellish the bottom of the skirt like in the pic...

Although now that I look at the first gown, it appears the waist line is gathered onto a tie somehow. How do you do a crossover and a gathered waistband with ties? It doesn't cross over, it gathers to the middle. The material essentially cascades down the front and is gathered in by the draw string. This dress would be very easy to modify for maternity wear. The ties on mine are also positioned internally so as not to bee seen from the outside at all. There is an internal modesty piece that does cross over behind the main dress front but if I was making this pattern up again I would not include it. I will try and get pictures, the bodice actually has three layers to the front. -Sarah
