As I promised earlier, I've downloaded photos of my bonnets, made by Mela Hoyt-Hayden. I'll try first posting the photo here and also the link to the page in case it doesn't work. I have a couple straws that would work well w/ making these capotes, and with having the instructions from the Free Patterns on Simplicity website, I hope to have at least one made this year. This is my Flicker album with them tinyurl.com/24g2joVal **EDITED** I guess it's not going to work for me. I tried adding brackets to it but no luck. I think this should fix it. Did you try the and the with capital letters and the square brackets? If you quote this post using the quote button you should be able to see how I did it if you are still having problems.

The second one, the capote, is so simple. It looks like a common straw hat that the crown was cut off, with a little left on to attach the fabric. The brim was then cut in the back and resewn to make it a smaller ring. A tube of fabric is gathered at one end into a tight circle, and the other end is gathered sewn to the hat. She put a piece of fabric inside under the top hole to cover it. Not sure it this is how it's always done tho. It's a little big on me still but I fill in the inside with some batting so it doesn't fall down too far on my head. Now if I had hair.....

I'm looking for a good design for a poke bonnet or something that will hold my massive head of hair. I found this site; apparently this is the milliner who made the bonnets for P&P and persuasion... they're lovely. www.louisemacdonald.com.au/costume_millinery.html

OH WOW! I'M IMPRESSED! She did the hats for House of Elliot too?! I loved that series. I have the three seasons of it. It looks like she made many of my favorite hats in the Austen movies too. Loved Lizzie's bridal hat. It doesn't say but it looks like a wire frame. I have one that a milliner friend refurbished for me in black netting and silk. Thanks, great site!

Actually it does say she made a wire frame and then covered it in tulle.

Has anyone seen a hat frame that could be used to make this bonnet that Heather McNaughten made here? tinyurl.com/2zgsro It would be perfect with the 1840s gown I'll be making shortly. I have emailed her on the TV message board, but wanted to share this shape too with others here incase I get an answer.

I got an answer already. Apparently it's a pattern, TV 551. Darn, I was hoping for a hat form, not a pattern. But I'll be picking it up from Heather while we're at the Dickens Fair. Since I hope to get back into the Summer millinery class at our local college, where we learn to sew buckram pieces and make hats, this would be perfect to bring. Otherwise she has you make a modern hat. It's nice to be different from all those youngsters in her class.
