I've recently become very jealous of the supreme sewing skills that abound on this forum. I have a "new" sewing machine that has been in my basement for the last 7 years and all I've ever done is hem some pants, make some REALLY simple curtains and figure out how to thread the thing and load a bobbin.
I'm pretty crafty and think I'm gonna take on making a bonnet from a cheap straw hat, but now I have bigger aspirations. I really want to make a dress-simple-if there is such a thing!
But....I'm starting with something I think I can handle, which is a reticule to go with my new dress. I'm pretty sure I can handle a simple bag and lining (I want it to have a 3-pointed bottom like the one in the picture from our Allseeing RSA's image of the bonnet and matching reticule at the raffle).
What I'm not sure how to do is to add the drawstring at the top. Can you give me advice on how to do this (in simple layman's terms-remember I need baby steps)?

I have a picture here of a reticule that was made for me last year, that I can probably make a pattern off of. www.pbase.com/cinnamonhrts/image/83685931 (Ignore bad hair/ had a foopah) When I get home later today, I'll pull it out and take some better pics of it, and measurements.

Val, That is exactly the style I was trying to describe. If it is not too much trouble, I'd love the pattern for that as well (thank you, thank you!). Would you and Dawn mind if I shared these patterns/instructions with my JASNA chapter? Our next meeting is on "Regency Dress" in preparation for a 2-day Jane Austen Festival this summer at Locust Grove (a great historic house/farm where our meetings are held). If not, I understand (really). The Locust Grove link (just because it is a neat place to check out) is: www.locustgrove.org/Thank you again for your help in this:)

Tess, share my pattern as much as you like. The only thing I really wish for is that people take a picture sometime to share the result. I'd love to see all the different interpretations that come out of a simple project. People are so creative and I love that! Modified for spelling mistakes!

Here's the photos of the reticule I have. It was made for me but I can take the measurements from it that I believe anyone could use to make one. tinyurl.com/24g2jo(Steph, you're welcome to use your wizardry to put the photos here if you like. There's two of them; the outside and inside. ) **Edited to add measurements: I'm going to measure down along the right side. *BE SURE TO ADD SEAM ALLOWANCES* Across the top is 7". Down the right side is 6" and curves slightly out each side, so it is now 8" wide. From that point (on the right) it goes down 5 1/2" to the center point. The length from the top center to the bottom point is 9 1/2". Mine is made with gold silk taffeta, lined with another silky cream fabric; has a rosette made w/ the taffeta, &a smaller rosette of lace on top of it, then a gold brass button on top. Each point of the reticule has a gold fringe thingie on it. The drawstrings are made of the same silk taffeta turned under to about to 1/4" wide, with thingies on it too. (sorry, I'm tired, brain can't come up with name of thingie, but everyone knows what a thingie is) Let me know if I need to clarify anything. It's possible I can have hubby scan a drawing with the measurements, on his new printer/scanner (yay, finally!) if needed also. **Edited again to add: They're tassels, the darn thingies are tassels!!!!

Val, Would you and Dawn mind if I shared these patterns/instructions with my JASNA chapter? I don't mind at all. I'll get the measurements, and edit my last post with those on it.

If anyone has been reading my measurements for the reticule while I've been editing it, make sure you double check it again, as I had to correct it three times. I don't recommend doing mathematical feats when you're tired. I just spent most of the day walking the streets of an antique fair in costume, and got goodies, mainly Edwardian.

Val, Thank you so much for the measurements. You are quite the trooper for doing a sewing errand for a forum friend after such a long day! I hope you had fun at the antique show, however.
I love the straw bonnet on your flickr album. Would you know where the straw form came from for "bonnet 2"? That is what I've been looking for, and while I've found things very close, none are what I want. It has the right shape and a very vine weave.
The pictures were very helpful. That along with Dawn's step-by-step should get me there with no trouble.
Thanks to you both for sharing the goodies. I'll post pics, but knowing me it could be awhile before I have a finished product!

I bought the bonnet from Mela Hoyt-Hayden at the Marketplace at Costume College. It's not a very sturdy material and gets mis-shapen alot, so I have to be careful while packing it. It's very soft. The one with the emerald green fabric is actually a little too big for me, so I have to stuff it to keep it up on my head so it doesn't cover my eyes. Maybe if I had some hair.....

I'd love to see all the different interpretations that come out of a simple project. People are so creative and I love that! Dawn, I finally got the first one made. I decided to make it smaller (I like small purses in real-life too!) I printed it a full size off the website and just used it as it printed (about 3/4 the original pattern size). It really came out a little small, so the next one I will make full size, then figure out if I need to adjust from there. Here is the side view: It made kind of a heart-shaped bag. If you look at it from the top, it is distinctly square. I kinda like it this way, but it definitely lost the original shape, which I like better. I'll post more as I make them. Thanks again!
