So, sewing machines weren't available during the regency and everyone had to sew everything by hand. Do you sew by hand? How long does it take you to complete something sewn entirely by hand? I know that I don't have time to do that by February, but I would like to do some garments by hand.

The only handsewing I've done is to whipstitch linings in place, and close seams, etc. I hate handsewing. I also handsewed all the beaded fringes ont othe reticules I made for the raffle.

Despite a reputation I seem to have gathered, I do most of my sewing by machine. I handsew all buttonholes, and a lot of the rolled hems on shirts. All the gold lace on my naval uniform was sewed on by hand, but not much else.

I machine everything that's hidden. I hand sew most of what can be seen (the sometimes exception being tucks in the hem of skirts. If you're down on the ground inspecting the hems of skirts you deserve to run up against machine sewing! But even this I'll do by hand if I have the time.)

It doesn't make sense to sew the hidden seams by hand unless you're a diehard, like Koshka the Cat.

Steph - I would not be surprised to find a few diehards among us. I fully intend to be a diehard some day. When my kid(s?) are a little older and have their own stuff to do. It will be good to be able to work on sewing a spencer by hand while I am watching my daughters gymnastics class or whatever. I am obsessed though.

Wouldn't it be nice to be such a purist? Unfortunately I am way too impatient. .. I'll save that goal for when I'm nice and old, but then I might not be able to see what I'm sewing. . .no matter. I LOVE hand sewing. Its very therapeutic, and I hand sew that which is seen. But I am afraid to hand sew the main seams, in case they come apart. As for Goblin - handsewing button holes? I'd love to learn to do that. I HATE button holing with the machine - never seems to come out right. Something to ask on other board, I suppose.

At the moment I just don't have time for sewing, full stop - much less sewing by hand (which is why I've blown off the last three ORS balls >P). But I quite like it, so I imagine I'll do at least some stuff all by hand.
