I think that it would be fantstic if the inspiration threads could be constrained to inspiration. Either for posting links/photos of extant garments or reproductions. I want people to have an easy resource to use. I also want everyone to post lots of new threads so our boards look really active an exciting.
Would anyone be offended if I went though and tidied up the threads by deleting tangents and unrelated comments? I am mostly thinking of the comments on the dance card thread (I am guilty there too).

Hi Cosmo, I think I understand your desire to “tidy things up” and organize the board but I just wanted to suggest that it’s normal for conversations to meander a bit and sometimes even evolve into other topics. I would hesitate to delete chatter in the threads because sometimes there’s something to say that may light a spark or would be found of value later. It also puts a weight of “value” on one’s conversation, which can be imposing and frustrating, and quite limiting to the poster (living in fear that their thoughts will be deleted because it’s not directly related to the official heading. – The Republic of Pemberly is like that and I get so annoyed at the mods on that board that I have almost stopped reading it). I find that the organization of the RSA boards is almost at an overwhelming level as it is, with topics and sub topics and mini sub topics. I can’t find what I’m looking for sometimes, even though I know it’s there somewhere. It’s rather like having a dresser with too many sub-dividers in the drawers. Other boards that I do enjoy reading limit the headings to 4 or 6 or 8 or maybe 10 headings and then just let people go – using the headings as guidelines and only occasionally moving postings to more relevant sections. Only rude or volatile conversation is deleted. – And of course it’s perfectly fair to remind people to stay on topic on occasion, but for the most part, silly or unimportant conversation dies a natural death all by itself. The search modem can be a very effective way to look back and locate old subjects. I think if one just typed in “inspiration” and their topic, “caps” for example, everything they could want would show up. If the conversation winds off to discuss ribbon or brooches or gloves, it’s not really a problem. Cross-referencing can work too, if you like. If anything, I’d suggest a change to simplify, rather than to limit, and encourage use of the “search” rather than making new “compartments”. You asked….

Dawn, I have to agree with you wholeheartedly regarding the RoP overmoderation; it's the reason why I don't go there any more, and it's part of the reason why this board came into existence. The mods at RoP are overbearing at times, and far too strict about deleting posts; I think it makes participants feel bad. I think we need to remember that we don't want to make people feel bad for becoming personal occasionally.

Dawn - I certainly don't want people to feel that they cannot chat. I just feel like there should be a few places where a person can just go and easily be able to find information without having to wade through chatter. I am not afraid to admit that I have OCD tendencies and that is why I am asking if people mind. I want everyone to be included.
How about this idea? Would you think it better if threads that I'd like to be informational like the pattern reviews and inspirational threads were locked and people PM their links to moderators to have them included kind of like the Great Pattern Review does? That way chatter wouldn't be an issue. I thought it would be better if people could just post their links themselves.

Cosmo, you're doing a great job and I don't mean at all to criticize. I just wanted to warn you against deleting conversation because it certainly changes the "flow" of conversation. If you want to put inspirational threads in separate compartment that works for me, but there still needs to be a place for people to discuss the images if they want to talk about the 'fourth one down' for example.

I'd rather not put them in a separate area. I want people to be able to comment about the images in the thread. It is just the comments that are not about the images and are only kind of related to a comment about one of the images that make the OCD me crazy. I am sure that most of those comments are from the use of the 15 most recent posts where people don't even know what the thread is really about they are just commenting. Well, I'll just think about this and make sure to ask before I delete any posts.

One thread often begets another, it's true. Is it possible to remove a sub thread from the main thread and set it up under its own subject? (Naturally, we should all be more careful about what subject we respond to, so I'm hoping this would only have to be done with past threads and less so in future.) Or is that far too much work?

I appreciate and understand the point of the Inspiration threads- however as a newcomer I find them very frusterating as all the links are broken and no longer work. It would have been wonderful if the pictures had been archieved into a photobucket specifically made for such purpose so that this problem wouldn't have occured.
