Oh, my head is spinning, I dare say.
I'm trying to wrap up the ORS event planning for the year so I can concentrate on doing more fun things like sewing costumes... but it's never ending. However there is light at the end of the tunnel.
We've secured a spot for our Winter ball (still a secret--not entirely period, but still spectacular), and Ainsworth House & Gardens has agreed to allow us to hold our Midsummer Night's Dream Masquerade party there on August 1.
YAY!
Then there's only one more workshop... a possible mask-making workshop for the midsummer thing; which I can huck into June, and voila... I'm DONE (so to speak). I still need to figure out a pre-ball workshop, and other details... but I may be able to breathe easy soon.
It's going to be an exciting year, there's already been so much going on, and tehre's so much to look forward to.
Now for the details... ECD callers... music... At least I have a chef in the wings to help with the food. :::OUF:::
Major, where are you? I need inspiration! How did it all go?

O Allseeing RSA - I need guidance. Will I and my ladyfriend be very out of place if we don't know English Country Dance at the Eugene Ball? I'd really love to go, because it sounds lovely, but I don't want us to be the odd ones out.

You should never hesitate to come to an event for fear of the dancing. All ORS dances are called, and the best thing for you to do is to throw yourself right into the thick of it. There are plenty of experienced people to help you through it (just pair yourself up with one of them and you'll be all set). As a personal experience, I knew (and still pretty much know) zilch about ECD. My first event, I was dragged into a set, and the first call was: "Ones Cast Down and twos lead up"---It might as well have been uttered in Esperanto because I had no idea what the heck that meant, but somehow, by the time I progressed to the end of the line, I was getting it (then I turned into a 2 and was confused all over again)... either way, it's a learning experience, and there will be plenty of folk there who don't have the slightest idea how to dance, and yet, I'm pretty sure they will be dancing. ::Hee hee:: Do not fear! Show up, we'll be there to guide you through, and you'll know enough of the calls by the end of the party, that you'll be more confident for each following event. Promise! If you're making the long drive down for the Eugene to-do, I'll see you there.

Hubby and I attended the Set to Music Ball in McMinnville a few weekends ago. It was fun and we just threw ourselves into the mix. We fumbled and tripped and looked silly, but we had a blast. I'm looking forward to seeing everyone at the Eugene Ball :-)

Wonderful! Thank you both for the reassurrances! Hopefully we'll also be able to make the beginners' workshop, but as that's the day before finals it may fall by the wayside.

Hello all! Just had to throw in my two cents on this one YES YES YES - please come to the dance whether you make it to the workshop or not (of course, I still hope you can make it - I'm such a dolt to schedule it around finals - DOH!). I promise that you will have a wonderful time and far from being the only one without experience. We welcome all newcomers and are more than happy to have you in our set - I teach a little ECD and love to have new people at events...it gives me the chance to share something I love, and hopefully help you catch the ECD bug. Also, if you haven't joined the ORS please do consider it - membership is free and we will keep you updated on the workshops (I intend to have many, many more before the winter ball). Hope to see you there!

Thank you so much for the encouragement! If I can finish our costumes in time we'll be there! (Ten days, two full costumes... piece of cake! I ordered the fabric today.) It's so comforting that you're all so friendly.

OH boy do I have questions! I am so excited about the Eugene event. I have not joined but would like to know if I can attend, if I need a partner, and the biggest question....what to wear? I found this delightful dress in a shop here made of velvet. Im not sure about the acceptability of this material. Also, might it be too hot to dance in? While Im at it, should I mention that I know nothing of the dance moves either? Im very excited about the event but dont want to end up a wallflower. I hope to hear from someone intime. Thanks so much. Angelique

Wear whatever you like; we encourage Regency garments, but anything will do. You are welcome to come alone, you won't be want for partners, all you have to do is stand up to dance and someone will dance with you. You will learn the moves as you go along, you'll be quite all right. I do recommend you join the ORS though so you can get notices of other events. Steph
