Does anyone know of good sources for period, or at least period looking, clothing brushes?
While down with influenza for the past 5 days (hey, I lost 10 lbs, but it wasn't fun) I watched the Hornblower series, Sharpe series, Master and Commander, and most of my Jane Austen DVDs. The item that kept jumping out at me was a clothes brush. Especially in the military flicks, they were brushing their uniforms to get them looking clean and what have you.
I have a non-period brush I use when needed. But it isn't a very good one. Tailors/seamstresses must have them. So I was hoping someone here would know a good source for period or period looking clothes brushes. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

What should the brush look like? Do you have an image? That might help. When reading your message though, I thought of some of the brushes in the tack shop - meant for grooming horses and cleaning tack - of course. These are often natural bristle (ignore the pretty pink nylon brushes ) and they often are wooden backed - some have handles - some do not. There are lots of shapes. I don't know if any of them would suit or not. Sorry you've had the flu. Hope you're feeling much better now.

I have never seen a period clothing brush but after googling for one I found this nice little clothing brush Im not sure if this is what you would be looking for or not... www.amadhatters.com/detail~id~31915.htmland actually it does look like a dandy brush, a horse brush, you could probably pick up a small wooden one at a tack store or farm supply store easily.

This looks similar to one I saw on Sharpe's Rifles, if I remember correctly. I apologize, I don't have any photos of what they look like. All I have is my mind's eye from watching all these period films lately I'll try a tack store, there's one not too far away. Thanks for the suggestions.

The Kent Travel Clothing Brush is just like a couple that I saw also and would probably fit my officers trunk quite nicely. These are just what I was hoping to find. Thank you very much.

Thank you, dear lady. I do appreciate your thought and help. There are some clothes brushes that I've found that are very very good. They are still made, I found some in tailor suppliers, barber supplies, and upper end men's clothing purveyors. However, $60+ seems a bit much, so now I'm looking for their inexpensive counterparts.

I completely agree with you on the price- though I'm falling in love with the idea of a Grand Tour brush set as a manly gift idea in general.

Yeah! It's simply your dressing brush, and a military style hair brush. All men who went on the Grand Tour brought those with them (according to Caswell-Massey, but I believe it)... or at least in some form. I think the catalogue links I sent you, put those two brushes together, and you have your set -- time to travel to Europe!
But I'm thinking about the men in my life I consider brothers, who are working on their character, and it seems a perfect fit.

Now I see what you mean. I may not have a matched set, but then I don't know that all officers would. Thanks so much, I really appreciate it.
