I am about half way through this novel and I am enjoying it immensely. Though after reading and watching Northanger Abbey I am excited to know about the black veil. I did not expect there to be so many uses of the word. It is tormenting me. I am curious what is behind the black veil, but I am scared to know it also. it is very exciting.

The black veil frustrated me to no end!! I almost despaired I would never know what was behind it -- but don't worry, all the mysteries will be explained, thank God. But I won't tell you what's behind the veil for all the world! Udolpho never went the way I expected it to -- where I thought it would end was actually only 2/3 of the way through. But the book seriously gave me shivers. I desperately want to see this as a movie or a miniseries... but the screenwriter would have to hack it to pieces, combine tons of characters, and change a lot of the timeline... and minimize fainting, lute playing, and banditti references.

There are a lot of fainting and banditti references. I am beginning to feel like it won't ever end; I have already thought that she was going to be murdered at least three times. Mrs. Radcliffe is such a tease.

I felt exactly the same!
Where are you now? If you can give code words?

I felt exactly the same! Where are you now? If you can give code words? Well I have just finished the part where Emily has just spoken with Dorthee the housekeeper about the late Marchioness. I think it is Volume 4 Chapter 2 or 3.

I have finished! It was so wonderful. I was very pleased with the way it ended and I am extremely glad that I had the fortitude to conquer my fears and overactive imagination to read through the end. Though I must admit theat there are a few parts that I skipped ahead a page and then peeked back after I knew how he event ended. I am fully satisfied. I would definitely enjoy watching a film or television adaptation of it.

Yay!
LOL -- I must admit, I skipped most of the poetry because I was too eager to find out what happened. I've promised myself I would go back and read it, but haven't yet.
I would LOVE to see a movie or mini-series.
::::SPOILER ALERT::::
I think if there was a movie, you'd have to cut it short -- after the escape, and combine Valentine and the other love sick guy that was held prisoner... though that gets rid of the thrill of finding out it WASN'T him.
:::END SPOILERS:::

Hello! Please forgive this intrusion on your thread, but I am wondering where I may find a copy of both The Mysteries of Udolpho and The Monk? I have tried several online services, but what few copies I have come across are outrageously expensive. Or perhaps one of you would be interested in selling your copy? I would also be happy to pay a fee to borrow yours and send it back to you when I am finished...no pressure, just a thought. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated

I went to Amazon and got Mysteries of Udolpho for only $11.00, in a really nice paperback. But they do have used ones for a lot less.
Abebooks.com is another great place to go for used books of a low price. Just make sure you choose books from the US (or your own country, if you're not in America.) The shipping will bump up the price a little -- but for the most.
The Monk is a bit cheaper, too.
Hope that helps!
