Well I guess this is the best spot for this thread, if I am wrong please feel free to move it. So Saturday was the War of 1812 Costume Conference at Ft. Meigs in Perrysburg, OH. There was a fashion show put on by Betsy Bashore, which I was in ;D , a presentation on the the evolution of the War of 1812 uniform, a session on fabric and material, and a great informative presentation by Susan Spencer on accessories and finishing touches. There were quite a lot of people in attendance and I did learn a lot, sadly I left my papers in Betsy's hat box. There were a handful of vendors and I managed to pick up a lovely shawl that I can use for evening or day wear. Its a great gold and red sari print, very excited to show it off this weekend at the ball in Lansing, MI. Well aside from that I wanted to share some pictures with all of you. Sadly I didnt not get near as many pictures as I had hoped, I wasnt expecting so many people to be talking to me and taking pictures of my gown so unfortunately there are only a few. Hopefully I will get some more from Rob, I know he took some. Front of my outfit that I borrowed from Betsy. I am wearing a black day gown with a red and gold rolled print short coat. I accessorized with a black painted straw bonnet trimmed in red, gold and black ribbon and I am also wearing a red coral and onyx necklace. The back of my outfit with a close up so you can see all the pleating. Front and back of the gown without the short coat Front of Sarah's gown. Its like a wrap front meets crossover gown. Very neat design, I will have to find out what pattern she used. The back detail of her gown shows all the pleating in the common "T" shape that was used then. This is a beautiful ensemble! I just couldnt resist sharing this outfit. She actually used a combination of patterns to construct the spencer, I just love the sleeves and collar. This is the only picture of gentlemens clothing I could get and its not even a good one since Ryan and Kyle wouldnt stand still. They are both sporting a middle to upper class look. I only got a back shot of this gown because I loved they way it hung. It reminds me a lot of the chemise gowns of the late 1700's. She is wearing a white "day to evening"gown with a blue and white beaded belt, blue sari shawl, and a turban with coordinating blue and white feathers. Her work is absolutely amazing and she actually sewed the entire outfit with the spencer I showed before. Here is another gown that I just loved. She did a wrap front gown and paired it with a spencer. I would have liked to get a close up without the spencer but you all know how difficult it is to get those things off! Well I hope you enjoyed those pictures. I will be sure to track down some more as soon as possible!

Wow, those are wonderful pictures! I adore the one of the older lady with the red capote, and the back of the white gown is stunning! It makes me all the more determined to make my ballgown like that. I love the stripe detail on the half-coat. The back is gorgeous.

Lauren- The day dress was so fun to wear! I absolutely love the back of it and the cut of the neckline. The fullness of the back was a nice touch and really hide my behind hehe. If you would like I could probably scan you the pattern from Betsy.
Steph- I wish I could have got a full length pidture of the older lady, her ensemble was to die for! I do believe she got the capote from a lady named Lydia who does amazing Regency accessories. Her bonnets are very drool worthy! The white gown was stunning and I loved how she was able to change it from day to evening with just some small additions. The front had a very low cut neckline, in an almost sweetheart style. Oh I wish I felt more determined after seeing all of the lovely evening gowns, instead Im feeling a little discouraged about my gown. The back of the short coat was beautiful, I received so many compliments on it and Betsy told me it wasnt that hard to do at all, just a bunch of pleating there. If you would like I could track down the pattern from Betsy and scan it for you.

That capote would be stunningly easy to do. No bonnet cutting, just a sun-hat with a soft muffin-top. :::Hmm:::

Dear Miss Credit, I had hoped to be at that conference, but I just didn't have the steam after our Ball the weekend before. I agree with you on the eldest ladies' ensemble. It is beautiful. I also think your gown is absolutely stunning. However, a gown is only as lovely as its model

What pattern was used for the day dress and half dress? Just out of curiosity :-) Also, what part of Ohio are you from? We used to live in Hinkly when I was 4 years old, and my brother was born in Clevland.

Dear Major- The event was splendid, would have loved to see you come out for it but I understand with your ball just recently held it would have been difficult. Besides the fashion sessions there were some lovely artillery talks as well, Im sure you would have found them very interesting. And oh yes, thank you for the compliment, you are too kind dear sir!
Dear Lauren- I believe Betsy said she used the Elegant Lady's Closet pattern from Sense and Sensibility, but Im not 100% sure on that. The short coat, I dont recall what the pattern was, maybe something out of Janet Arnolds Patterns of Fashion. I can surely ask Betsy for you, after all she's the one that made it! Oh what a small world! I have reenactor friends that live in Hinckley. I live in Northwest Ohio, in Tiffin to be exact, just moved back there from Columbus. I actually live only 45 mins from Ft. Meigs, I think I recall you saying to be interested in 1812 stuff?

I would love to get involved in 1812 things, however we live in Oregon and Ohio is a bit of a jant Maybe someday I will make back there. I haven't been to Ohio since I was little, and I hope to visit again someday :-) My parents are planning to take my brother and I back to Kentucky and Ohio to see our family's historical sites someday. I hope it will be in the nearer future. They were thinking about going this year, but decided to come to Oregon to see us :-) I made my ball gown from the S & S Elegant Lady's Closet. I love that pattern. I also made a day dress from it. There's so many options :-)

I just got started in 1812 and I LOVE it! The group I just joined, 19th US Infantry, are probably the nicest and most fun group of people I have met in the reenacting world. I do enjoy Ohio and couldnt imagine ever living so far away as say Oregon, I know I would miss it too much. I havent used that pattern yet but I have heard many good things from it. I am planning on first getting some underpinnings done and then I think I will move onto that pattern, I am really looking forward to making a walking gown with some lovely striped material.

Miss Credit, Your dress is lovely! I especially like the back of the jacket:)
I do wish those boys would have allowed some pictures to be made. I'm attempting to understand more of the gentleman's wardrobe and they looked very dashing.
I live only a few hours from Ft. Meigs, so I will have to look for upcoming events. It looked like such fun!

Tess, This weekend is a ball in Lansing, MI and I know several of the gentlemen there at the costume conference will be attending the ball as well, I will insist on them standing still for a few brief photos for you. Where abouts in Kentucky do you live? I say it is almost required of you to come up to Ft. Meigs for a visit! Memorial Day weekend there is an event if you would be interested.

Dear Miss Credit,
So now that you are part of the 19th USI, do you know what events you will attend this season? I know the 19th does a good number of events every year. It sounds like you are planning on being at Fort Meigs during Memorial Day weekend (some of my regiment may be there and I am contemplating going as well), what other events have you thought about? Siege of Fort Erie? Grand Tactical? Mississinewa?

Dear Major, Oh Major, I insist that you attend Fort Meigs during Memorial Day weekend, I say a visit to us in Ohio is almost recquired!
I shall indeed be at Fort Meigs for whatever events they may hold, it being so close to my own home, but it has been insisted that I attend as many events as possible. My new found friends have told me interesting stories about events in the past and I simply cannot just pick and choose between events. I am planning to be at Fort Niagara and Fort Erie as well as Put In Bay, Mississinewa and Grand Tactical. I am going halfsies on a new tent and am hoping to get a lot of use out of it this season :]

Another member of the 1812 community with spirit and energy. With all the events you are going to, I am quite sure our paths will cross on more than one occasion this season, and a pleasure it will be. Fort Meigs is about 50/50 for me as of now. I'm trying to find someone to travel with. I don't know that I can make it if I have to go alone, but we'll see. I know I'll have friends there with the 19th, I've known Rob and Betsy for a number of years, so that would help in the decision if it came to it. I'll try to let you know my status as it is decided.

My thanks to you for offering to send pictures of the gentlemen. Frock coats create an especially handsome look! Of course, military uniforms are titillating as well, but there seems to be dearth of pictures on the forum (I jest, Major!). I am 4 hours our of Perrysburg, in Louisville. I'll have to check my calendar regarding the Memorial Day celebration. The fort looked wonderful on their website and I would very much like to see it some day.

Thanks so much for sharing your photos! I’m so glad to hear you had a wonderful time! Your black gown is lovely! I love the shape of it! Is it cotton or linen? Which style of stays did you end up wearing? And I would refer to the striped garment you wore as a “half-robe”, not a short coat. The bonnet is drool-worthy!

Dear Major, I am eagerly awaiting your decision but alas I understand that it is difficult to travel by ones self especially with the outrageous gas prices nowadays. Please do not feel pressured in attending the Fort Meigs event, I am sure we shall meet soon enough.
Dear Lady Serendipity, Thank you, the short coat was quite the favorite of many ladies in attendance. I think it is nearly a staple in a wardrobe now after seeing how many different ensembles you can put together with it. Ah yes, that dear older lady was the sweetest and most elegant of creatures. I do wish to be like her some day as well.

I do know for certain that I am going to Grand Tactical, I'm already shopping for my airline ticket, and I'm 90% for Mississinewa 1812. So our paths will cross, it is just a matter of when. (Hopefully I'll have photos to post this weekend, but shhh, it's a secret )
