I apologize for the delay on posting these photos, the ball was Saturday but I swear I have never been so busy before! My beau and I carpooled with Rob and Betsy and the four of us met friends up in MI to ride with them the rest of the way. A good time was had by all and it was a really nice event. I was very delighted at the eagerness of the young gentlemen to dance, I figured I would have to twist my boy's arm to get him to dance! Again I must apologize for the lack of photos but I was just so busy dancing that I nearly forgot I had my camera with me! www.flickr.com/photos/26126203@N02/I hope you enjoy

It looked like great fun! I wish I had something close to where I live to attend What facility was the ball held in? It looked very appropriate for the event. Are you attending Mississinewa? Is there a ball at that event?

Lauren, Thank you so much for the compliment. I am extremely happy at how the bonnet turned out. I think it was pretty good for just winging it.
Tess, The ball was wonderful! It was held at a Methodist church in Lansing, MI right next to the capital building. Im not sure what they used the hall for but it was very neat. It had a stage and balcony all around with separate sitting rooms off to the side where you could sit and watch the couples dancing. There is talk of them moving the ball to Greenfield Village in Detroit, MI. This was their 2nd year doing it and it was such a hit that they would like to get a bigger and more historical venue. I am greatly looking forward to it! I will definitely be attending Mississinewa this year, I actually cannot wait to be there. I have heard so many great stories from friends about the event and the pictures I have seen look great. I have not previously been to this event so Im not 100% sure if there is a ball or not but I know the Major would be able to give you an answer.

I wish we were back east sometimes, it would be infinitely less difficult to find appropriate venues than it is here in Oregon. Of course the places that look the part are all mucho $$$$$

Have no fear ladies, the Major is here to serve and answer. After a long drum rollllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll YES! There is a dance at Mississinewa every year on Saturday night. It is always quite fun as well! At least I have always had a wonderful time. If I know any of you ladies will be in attendance, I will request of my CO to bypass or be tardy to the Officers Mess which usually starts a bit after the dance does. I don't know if anyone else is planning to go to the Grand Tactical this year, but there is also a dance being planned for the Grand Tactical this year as well. That event is being held this year at Jefferson Patterson Park and Museum near St. Leonard, MD. (Next year's location has yet to be announced.) I also plan to attend this dance as well. Hopefully my command duties will not limit my time to dance.

I thought there was a ball at Mississinewa but I just wasnt sure, thank you Major for clearing that up. Now that I think about it I think I recall Betsy telling a story about making a couple of boys do a jig at the dance a couple of years ago, hmmm.
That is awfully generous of you to offer to pass up the Officers Mess for us ladies, I know I would love to have you as a partner for at least one dance that evening. If however you are unable to miss the Officers Mess at Mississinewa then I insist that a dance be had at the Grand Tactical!

If however you are unable to miss the Officers Mess at Mississinewa then I insist that a dance be had at the Grand Tactical! My Dear Miss Credit, et al, The Officers Mess usually starts an hour or so after the start of the dance. My only concern is that all the other gentlemen will have your dances booked until later after I would have to leave. Perhaps if you could force yourself for at least one dance earlier... And if you are not otherwise engaged, you would be welcome to check out the Officers Mess for a while and return to the dance as you wish. It's only a short distance, maybe 2 minutes walk, away. Lt. Col. Trumbull and his lady are usually invited and in attendance. And the Major would be most honored to have a dance at the Grand Tactical as well. I'm very glad to hear that you are attending. It promises to be a fantastic event! There are so many things in the works that it is almost mind boggling. After some social time Saturday evening, I will probably spend the rest of the night and Sunday morning in the field as I may be in command of a portion of the forward pickets. I will look forward to seeing you there.

I am giving serious consideration to attending Mississinewa. I had plans to attend the JASNA General Mtg. in Chicago but, alas, after totaling the registration fee, workshop fees, hotel and food I would be looking at around $1000 and that is simply outside the bounds of sanity on my current allowance! So...I could come to Mississinewa and stay one night for a much more reasonable fee (I would think). Can either of you shed some light on attending such a function in costume when I'm not a member of any reenactment, er, "group"? Is there some registration required? I'm unsure as to how that would work as a civilian. Major, I'm sure you stay with your men in the field, but I'm assuming there would be some hotels near by for my lodging. I would love to be deep enough in to have all the accouterments to stay on site...maybe as a sutler. ::sigh:: Maybe someday....

Oh Major you flatter me so! I can assure you that my dance card shall not be filled so early in the evening, on the contrary I had only one dance partner the entire evening of the Lansing ball. The gentlemen either seemed wary of changing partners or found the ladies to be too intimidating. I shall, in fact, reserve the first dance or two just for you. Oh wow the Officers Mess, I would have never dreamed of attending! I have heard Miss Betsy speak of them, I hear they usually involve a bit of wine. I would love to attend the Officers Mess for a bit, just for the experience if not to see you. As for the Grand Tactical I am very excited to be in attendance I think aside from Mississinewa it is the most anticipated event on my calendar thus far.
Tess, As I have afore mentioned I have not attended Mississinewa but I hear it is a great 1812 event to attend. I have been looking forward to being there for about 3 years now and I greatly suggest attending. Hmm I am sure that you could find a hotel close by but I would not see any problem in just dressing up and coming out. I have seen it done at CW events where non reenactors would dress and attend functions, I know some events even offer a discounted admittance fee if you come in period dress. I myself share a tent with my beau and fortunately over the years of us both reenacting we have gathered the necessities, but like the others I stay in the field with the men. Perhaps you could email the event managers for Mississinewa?
